12 bolt strength?

If your wanting to upgrade go with the 14bsf or 14bff. IMO going from a 10b to a 12b is a waste of time and money.
Yeah for sure Ive got the 12b now. So would an unmodded basic 14bff be a lot better (for the money and all) than an upgraded 12b? I'll probably wheel the 12 till it breaks but I've seen some pretty tempting 14b deals, and we have some in my autoshop class at school I might be able to get my hands on

14BFF 10.5" ring gear > 12B 8.75" ring gear

Along with axleshaft diameter, and the fact that it's a full-floating axle among other things...

If you can get a deal on one for $200 or less, snatch that bad boy up. You can't go wrong...

I know this has been asked a million times but I cant find it, how can I tell the difference between 3/4 and 1 ton? I know the spring perches are different which is why I want a 3/4 thatll bolt right in but how can I tell by just looking at it?

You have to measure the perches to tell. The brakes are also different. The 1 ton has the larger drum breaks then the 3/4 tons. There are also 2 different 3/4 ton brake sizes.

They all have the same gears and axle shafts, though. The spring and shock locations are the only real visible differences and have no effect on anything besides the time it's going to take you to install it.

This discussion comes up daily. Search a little and you find all kinds of opinions. The popular view is upgrade to a 14bff. Here's another recent discussion Click

The cost of a 14bff is super cheap. Now add the cost of the 8 lug outers for the front. If you go to a bigger tire to regain the clearance lost by the bigger pumpkin, you will have to swap out the front to a D60. Now big $$$

There are some bullet proof rigs on this site built right for serious crawling.

Sorry to hijack, but you ride a BMW? I have a k1200RS. Let me know and I'll PM you.:D

Measure the distance of your 12 bolt spring perches. Measure from centerpin to centerpin and remember that number. Then go to a srw 14bff and measure the spring perches. The 73-87 1/2 ton, blazer, and 3/4 ton trucks all have the same spring perch distance on the rear axles. The wms is 67" on a srw 14bff so make sure its srw. If its the same as your 12 bolt, then its a 3/4 ton version of the 14 bolt.
