Finally some carnage on thw 12b Disc's

Well after using the :k5: as a DD for over a year with the discs on, I finally broke something. :doah:

I was driving it to and from work (about 25 miles 1 way) and Wed. night I started to get a clunk while braking. I crawled under the truck after getting home and didnt see anything right off the bat. So I drove it to work Thursday. It continued to clunk everytime I hit the brakes. But it felt like it was coming from the front end. Then on the way home Thursday I hit the brakes and felt a "pop"!:eek1: and the pedal went straight to the floor. I limped it home and checked it out in the driveway. This is what I found:

The clunking I heard was the backing plate rotating back and forth with braking since the 4 bolts had come loose or backed out.

The "pop" I heard and felt was the brake line twisting around the axle tube after the final bolts fell out of the backing plate as it spun around with the disc.:doah:

Luckily I had Friday off, so I went to Napa and picked up a replacement brake line. I pulled it apart and re-installed the backing plate with new bolts and some more locktite. Hooked up the hose and cleaned up the mess.

A bolt did chew up the inside of the rim a bit, but nothing major.

It actually took longer to get the brake system bled than it did to fix the caliper and hose since I lost all the fluid in the rear circuit. :D

Question, Since the 99-04 chevy half ton trucks came out with rear discs, couldn't we adapt those setups onto our older trucks with drums? I am unsure if caliper bracket mounts unbolt off the axle tube or not.

I'm not sure with the later axle. I have never looked at one. I just used what I had laying around. I still keep toying with the idea of putting Eldorado calipers or something on so I have the E-brake. But I just havent gotten around to it yet.

I love driving it with the spool. I know what its going to do all the time. If I slide a little bit, I just pop the gas a little and the rear end straightens back out. Not like when it was open and I didnt know what side was going to get traction or not. The only down side is I have to rotate tires alot more. Those back tires like to wear down real fast. :D I'm hoping that since I grooved my new tires they wear a little better then the last set.

Well, I took your advice, and found a used mini spool on the bay. I also have my disc brakes like yours. I don't DD the blazer anymore, so it should be great. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Installed a used Richmond mini spool, just like yours... Did you have to grind down your c-clips a little to get them on? I had to grind the outside portions a little to get them in. I've read online that this practice is normal sometimes...
