I don't know if this should go in the Diesel section, but I figured it would get more looks here.

I am going to start gathering parts for a 12V swap into my V3500.

What I need to know is what are the differences in the 89-98 12 valves? Why does the 94-98 the more sought after motor?

The most sought after 12 valvers are the factory P-pump motors. The P pump refers to the Bosch P7100 injection pump, the pumps are easily moded and rebuilt, generally considered the most reliable injection pumps, and can support SERIOUS power. The 94-98 engines were also factory intercooled so IIRC the intake setup is diferent then the non intercoled trucks. Also IIRC the 98 is the most sought after of the 12 valvers because it is a P pump engine, was intercooled and has later style (stronger) connecting rods. :D

I am sure I left out some things, some of the other cummins guys will know and or correct me on ;)

Also generally the newer the engine, the higher the hp and tq numbers were from the factory :D

These are all the dodge versions 5.9 , auto transmission had lower power levels than manual transmission. The started out at 160hp to 215hp @2500rpm and 400 to 450 @2500

The 89-91 were Non I/C ,Ve pump
The 91.5 were I/C ,Ve pump
The 94-98.5 were I/C and have the inline P7100 ,power level stops at your Wallet .

The Ve will get better fuel mileage the the P7100 ,if you going to tow and want power than a P7100 is better.

There are other onroad version of the 5.9 in med duty trucks and buses.

Ok well this is for my V3500 that I DD most of the time and I tow my K5 with it on weekends. Looking to get better mileage than my 454 and also be able to pull hills towing above 35 MPH.

So the 91.5 and up would be preferred because they are intercooled?

Can you put the P pump on a 89-91 motor?

You can but I guess it's expensive and requires taking the whole front half of the motor.

I've been looking (and found) some 5.9s, all have been the inline pumps, 5 so far. 4 are Fedex units, still have the tranny and still bolted in the frame with EVERYTHING attached...

That's a good deal up here, don't know about down there . . . . I'd prefer a 5-speed but up to you. That combo will have the NP205 behind it with a 23-spline input shaft, the 5-speeds had an NP205 with a massive 1-1/2 inch 29 spline shaft.

Sounds like that includes the intercooler and tubing and everything, it's an awesome deal. The only drawback is that it's not in a truck by the sounds of it so you will have to figure out wiring on your own.

Yeah I would prefer a 5 speed as well but that can be added right :wink1:

What kind of wiring is there with a 12V install? I was under the impression its fairly simple.

bery little for wiring. 12vdc to the starter 12vdc to the fuel solenoid add fuel suction and return......it will run. then run your grid heater relays off a switch to the dash. golden.

that '93 Ve truck idoes sound like a good deal. but you never know condition right. I would hold out for a '94-'98 P7100 pumped truck. they're more plentiful than the 1st genners, and just better.

I bought my donor '95 2500 dodge for my Chev project. as a whole running truck off a rancher. $2000. and I drove the truck on and off the trailer. if you look around and wait it out, you will find better.

Rods in a 12v are no stronger than in the ISB. they're all the same beef.

Ive been wanting to do this lately too, just need a better truck to start with than my K10... and that one little aspect called money.

Problem with that is about the only way you'll get a 205 that bolts behind a Dodge stick tranny is by buying the whole truck--so you might as well buy a Cummins that has a five speed already and get the right t-case at the same time . . . . .

Ok I didn't know that. Will any NV4500 bolt behind the 12V with the right bellhousing? Is the Dodge 4500 > GM 4500?

Cummins version of the 4500 has a bigger input, and different bell I believe.

You can use a GM tranny, but has to be 96-up. Also input needs to be swapped, there is something else but can't remember. Heard that the GM tranny is better than the Dodge cause of the 5th gear nut not coming loose cause of the yoke is bolted on, Dodge is a slip yoke....I need to find out, doing this to my truck/tranny.

You can use a dodge Nv4500 from a Gas V10 or Diesel ,The dodge has the 5th gear nut problem and that due to not having a fully splined shaft. What happends when the engine RPM is to low / to high of gear and when pulling in 5th gear id will spit off the nut and you'll have no 5th gear. There is many updates to fix the nut and some work and some don't,many never have problems because it all how there used.

The Gm Nv4500 96 and up can be used. You'll need to change the input shaft and seal retainer ( just unbolts ) and install the 1 1/4 input and the Dodge V10 or 5.9 Cummins Bell hosing will bolt on.

i actually wanted to do this since my background is in Cummins Diesels. but i was going to run into the problem of driveshaft angles with my current lift so i decided against. your best bet is to find a wrecked dodge and steal it, if you get the whole truck you can swap in the front D60 so you get the correct drop on the front Drive shaft and use the dodge Tcase an go that route. plus most come with 4.10s some come with 3.55s.

check out the for sale ads on there. i know of a few that are wrecked. theres a ppump 12 valve in there with a fully built auto worth about $2500-4000 on its own being sold for $4500 due to front end collision.
you could buy it, and sell that tranny out and get back majority of your cash if so decired.
