So I bought a rear out of a m1008 for a smoking deal, the only problem is that the breather 'nipple' has been broken off. I tried taking a punch and driving it through but did not have any luck. Anyone ever have this same problem? Any suggestions? i was thinking about drilling it out more and putting a pipe thread to it but wasn't sure if there was an easier solution.

Thanks for any help in advance!

i had the same problem.i just drilled it out and added a barbed 5/16 or 3/8 inch fitting and since there were not much threads left i just used jb weld to hold it in place and seal it.hasnt been a problem yet 7 years later.

You can drive it out from the inside. It has a lip to prevent it from going through from the outside.

I would drive it out & tap it for pipe thread & put a nipple in it. I do that to all of my offroad trucks anyhow. Keeps sticks or rocks from flying up & knocking it out.

I figured you had to drive it from the inside, do I have to pull the carrier? what would the harm be with drilling and tapping it as is?

My buddy had the bright idea to drill and tap his. I think his was actually broken off flush when he bought it. Anway......he started driving it in, then it just stopped solid....Ended up that it came out on the inside and had buried itself into one of the holes in the carrier adjusting sleeves.....of course you couldnt get back to knock it up off the adjusted so we had to pound it round and round and tear the crap out of the adjuster to get the carrier back out, so he could finish knocking the breather in and then he had to get a new adjuster. It was a PITA and I swore that day I would never tap another one.

See the quote below yours. I would pull the carrier. If you drill & tap as is you will still be dealing with the press fit part. In my experience it comes out too easy. I want it gone so I will not loose a breather tube. If you figure gears & detroit in a 14 bolt you got at least $500 in parts. Is it really not worth an hour labor to replace.

K20: It sounds like the problem wasn't tapping the hole, it was driving the old one through.

It is surprising how easy some of them will come out. You never know until you start messing with it. I have pulled some with pliers & others give a little fight but never much.

if you can get the old one out, can you just tap the housing without pulling the carrier? can the breather tubes get loctited into the housing so they won't come out so easy?

yeh getting the old one out was the problem, but for some reason it wouldnt come out through the the top, I dont think he could get ahold of it or something, its been awhile.

So here's the update:

I noticed what you guys were talking about, it is a flange/boss that is pressed into the housing so there is no way I could just drive it through. Therefore, I decided to try and drill/tap the boss (it's pretty decent size) with an 1/8" nipple/pipe thread thingy I 'borrowed' from work. I started drilling into the boss and guess what? the darn thing decides to break free and I was able to pull it up and out! The only thing I'll have to do now is 'borrow' a larger nipple from work, a 1/4" thread end to compensate for the larger hole. Life is good!

My recommendation to anyone with this same issue is to start drilling out the old one and she'll break free so you can pull it out. Just be careful, as mentioned above, you don't want to drill too deep and hit your adjuster/coupler.

Thanks for all the help guys! I'll take some pics sometime this week and show you what I did.

So to add some pictures of the process and then the end product, I'm very happy with the end result!

I picked up the brass nipple from work (sorry don't know where to recommend for cost or location... but would think any hardware would have it)

The nipple itself is a 1/4 - 28 (I think, not sure if it's 28... taps in the garage) with the flange set up for a 3/8 hose

where did you get the brass nipple and what size is it?

It looks like one of those hose barbs that doesn't require any hose clamps to tightly secure it to the barb. That's what the little yellow ring does. The only place I have seen them is through Kilby Ent. AKA OBA. But then again I have never sought them out to buy either.

If I didn't luck out and find one at work, I probably would have looked at McMaster online... they're fast (same day or next shipping)

I know this is an old thread, but arent you guys worried about getting shavings in the diff when you tap the hole???

I havent pulled my cover yet but it looks like its not in a place that you could throw a rag to catch the shavings.
