If you must drill and tap it without taking the thing apart use thick grease on the drill bit and go slow it'll collect the shavings and keep them from falling in.

coat the tap with grease .
2-3 turns remove / clean / recoat
2-3 more turns and same as above .
when done magnet on a stick for any shavings left over.
