I have a detroit that has been in 2 different 14 bolts over time. Put it in another 14 bolt yesterday and I used the shims that sit on either side on the spider gear assembly.

I can't remember if I was supposed to use them or not.

Everything is back in the axle and torqued to spec. Detroit is moving both hubs in the same direction as it should and everything moves freely.

Couldn't find much info on the internet and I dont have an install pamphlet for the detroit.

I believe I had it setup exactly like this in the last 14 bolt and never had any issues out of it.

The shims are literally about the thickness of a fingernail.

EMPTY CASE of all guts and washers from spider gears on a open carrier .

install detroit unit . leave on wing nut/bolt .

align both halfs of carrier with the cast in arrow on each half were the faces meat up when set together .

bolt ring gear down .

undo and remove wing nut/bolt and install carrier back in axle housing .

Damn...

i did pull apart a 14ff with detroit 1 time and it had washer in there . guy said he had no problems . but maybe thats why it never unlocked as much around corners . . . .

First one I ever installed forever ago in a different century I did not take em out. Never unlocked. But drove like that for a while. Fixed it later all was well

I do want it to unlock on corners lol, it was worth doing it the second time to make sure it was right.

Went through and chased just about every hole on the axle and cleaned everything up real good this go around.

I now wonder if mine is like this and I'm just too lazy to notice. I remember doing something with those shims.

Jack up one side and check and see if it rotates per the manual
