14 bolt disc brake swap - need help

Take the diff cover off, push the axle(s) inward towards the carrier, rotate carrier until you can see the ends of the axleshafts and that the c-clips are clear of the side gears, remove c-clip from axleshaft ends, pull axleshafts out, being careful with the axle seals.

remove the 8 bolts in the center of the hub, then the axle will slide out.

here are pics of my diff. I can see the C clips, but I cannot slide the axle in to remove the clips.

You need to remove the center pin. It is held by 1 small bolt. push axles in and remove the C clips.

frankin5, thanks that is what I thought.

new problem - what size is that stupid bolt? 3/8's is too small 7/16's is too big. 9mm too small and 10mm is just too big. I guess it could be 13/32's, but of course I do not have that socket.

do you have a set of boxed end wrenches that are 12 point. it is either the 3/8 or the 10. its been awhile

Need more help

after fighting the flu for the day and a half, i am at it. The bolt is definately 10mm, but i still can not get it out. I only have a 10 mm socket and a 10mm open ended wrench. Both slip on the nut if a lot of pressure is applied.

I do not want to do damage (or do more damage) to the nut. It is super tight does not seem to want to come loose. I am going to run up to napa and see if they have a 10 mm closed wrench. Can i apply heat to help get it out?

any help? I am stuck!

ohh yeah, just to be sure, in my pictures on the 1st page, it is the small nut towards the bottom correct?

They can be stubborn , but usually a little nudge with a box end wrench in a tube as a breaker will do the trick .

Heat could help , but you have to get all that gear fluid totally cleaned out if you don't want to smell the fumes when you apply the torch .

They used weird size bolts on all the axles . One of my axles takes a 5/16 inch wrench , I cringe everytime I start to turn it .

well hell! i picked up a 10mm combo wrench and then smacked it with a hammer. I tried it with and without a breaker bar.

the f'ing thing is now stripped. The wrench just turns around it.

wtf do i do now???? Can I use a cutoff wheel and cut the damn thing out? Do i have to remove the diff?

little help here!

Weld a nut onto the stripped bolt and remove. Then you must find another special bolt to replace it with.

any other ideas? :dunno: i am trying to locate a friend with a welder. I do not have one.

I have been thinking of going with a lockrite or noslip, but I am guessing I still need to get this off to put the locker in, correct?

this friggin sucks. my truck is not a dd, but I need it for hauling crap for my house build.

I've always hated C-clip axles for this...

When my 10 bolt's bolt broke, i used a drill and and easy out to get it out...Of course this was after the bolt had snapped. Have you tried a pair of vice grips? Smaller wrench that was beat on with a hammer?

And what reaally sucks is you cant pull anything out, until that bolt and center pin comes out :(

i am officially f'ing frusterated right now. i am ready to throw the whole f'ing thing on th burn pile.

It the head of the bolt is already strip out I would get the largest pair of visegrips I could get in there and clap them down as hard as I could. You can't damage any more then it is now.

If that fails then welding on a nut would seem the next best option.
