I have a 14 bolt with 4:10 gears. I want to put 5:13 gears and run 40" tires. What is the protocol for this? Do I need to find a 14 bolt with the 4:56 carrier? As always what is the less expensive solution?
Changing gear ratios is far from a remove and replace kinda deal, you have to re-shim everything to make sure that the gears mesh correctly. It also involves a few special tools, read here is you're unfamiliar with gear setup.
And yeah, there are thick gears made for a 14 bolt so you won't need to change carriers on your diff.
just like they said, thick gears...i actually just got my thick 5.13s from PORC. just another thought, if u have the extra $$ and want a locker, this is a VERY good time to do so. then you wont have to go back re-installing the gears.
If you're going for a locker you need to make sure your carrier is an open carrier and not a gov-lock. The locker for a 14ff goes inside the stock carrier and it needs to be an open carrier that has 4 cross pins.
5.13 thick gears for a 14FF seem to be far more common then standard gears.
A locker such as a Detroit or Lock-right just fit in the existing open carrier, so if you have an open carrier you would not have to reset the gears if installing one of those two. If you wanted an ARB, or had the factor Gov-lock, then yes you would have to reset the gears again. Though even with the first option it would be a good time to go ahead and install the locker just to save the time.
He will need to do a gear set-up no matter what he does since he's changing gear ratio. If he was using the same gears and only installing a detroit then there would be no gear set-up involved.
