I was changing gear oil in both axels and when I opened up the rear this is what I found. It looks like the water and mud came in around the driver axel seal. I got it cleaned up and the bearing still look good. Now to re assemble.

Yummy.....how long did it take to clean that nasty chit out?

Mmmm... Mud. That looks tasty, I bet it smelled great too. It reminds be of changing a diaper.

Mmm.... there's just something about cracking open a diff cover and smelling the horrible stench of well used, mud filled gear oil that makes a man wanna vomit. Ugh I can almost smell it now.

I didn't think of this before, but before you cleaned it out, you could have spun the pinion around a few times and used the mud to check your pattern.

Ok that sounded funnier in my head. I'm done now. We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

What's worse...finding that after you wheeled or finding ancient gear lube that's separated into turpentine and sludge under a new-to-you-used vehicle?
