While watching vids on rebuilds too learn about mine, I seen that there's a pump in the pinion. I was wondering if it really does anything? And if so, where would I find one?

My pinion pilot bearing on the nose of the gear disintegrated and some of the rollers went through the pump.
It's not pulled apart yet, but looking down into it it looks chewed up pretty good in there.

Looking at it I guess it lubes the pinion bearings. So that's that answer... But I still can't find a replacement listed anywhere.

There's no literal pump like in an engine or trans. The only thing I've ever seen that might be considered a pump is the oil veins (or tunnels) in the pinion support that carry and direct splash oil.

When I watched the rebuild videos a couple guys showed like a finned washer type thing they called the 'pump'... But I'm not sure if that's what it is actually or what they called it... I'm sure something has to push oil up out of the top hole in the support. Wasn't sure if just the spinning would do that

Pump is casket in to housing and when pinion spins it pumps is best I can explain.

Mark you housing before taking it off to match pump back up. Heard you can starve bearings!

I did mark the housing's. The ring gear can't get oil to the outer pinion bearing. I'll have to just see when I get it apart I guess. I can't find that vid again.. been looking.

Insert the pinion bearing retainer, with pinion installed, into the axle housing. At this point I just re-used the original pinion depth shim between the retainer and axle housing as I like to set backlash before worrying about pinion depth.

When installing the bearing retainer, make sure that the oiling port on the retainer (yellow arrow) matches up with the oiling galley in the axle housing (red arrow). Strangely, no manual I have ever read mentions this - which is strange because the bolt pattern is symmetrical, meaning you could overlook this step and still install the retainer in the housing...with predictably disastrous results!

Don't ask!

Also Eric (blazinzuk) can help you out on it I am sure he walked me through it like a champ!

Seems like he has build a few before!!!!

I've never taken a pump out. I've never seen one and I've never seen a diagram that points it out.

As long as you line up the oiling passage your good.

Ok.. I've read through that pirate Bible once.:waytogo: I have no idea where I seen that flat piece with sort of fins on it...but I was looking up 14b pinion rebuilds when I seen it. That slot with the yellow arrow is where I found some of my rollers and some other pieces.

I'll just tear it apart and go from there. Looking down that slot isn't pretty

It was during pinion rebuild searches..... Does a 9" have something like that? Because I watched a few of those vids too because they're similar (ish)

I was hoping there was one.. because if not I have a big groove in my pinion shaft.
