14 bolt questions.... Carnage pics

Have to wait till tomorrow night. It's all wrapped in plastic in the back of my truck at the moment.

Strangely, no manual I have ever read mentions this - which is strange because the bolt pattern is symmetrical, meaning you could overlook this step and still install the retainer in the housing...with predictably disastrous results!

The bolt pattern looks symmetrical, but it is not. One hole is slightly off. It's possible to install 5 bolts but not all 6.

Ask me how I know... :haha:

Going back through videos the one that I came across that caught my eye was the np241 rebuild. The pump in that is what I was thinking of :doah:... In the vid he shows it but just mentions it and moves on, and it looked like a somewhat flat disc with tangs on it at quick glance... That's what I kept seeing in my head lol

The closest thing to that in a typical axle is a disc that installs between the inner bearing and pinion head, it's a little larger in diameter than the bearing and also acts as one of the shims. The ring gear throws oil up into the oiling vein in the snout of the housing, as the disc spins (with the pinion) it throws oil around the snout helping to lube the bearings via splash. The disc is referred to as an oil slinger.

'Groove' I was seeing is the beatup side of the crush sleeve. Gear looks good though

I drove it an HR and a half home and a couple trips across town before this was taken apart to check. Could have gotten worse quick
