14 bolt #s

I understand now, thanks /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Crazy enough but high pinion found a 14BFF in the paper totally rebuilt with 5.13's in it, I wonder if he bought it.

1985-1988 C/K/R/V parts manual:

'85-88 C/K/R/V (no differentiation for C/K10,20,30, etc)
10.5" locking diff
w/4.56, 5.13 ratio part number 14020929 (this is the entire differential case)

10.5" ring gear (open)
85-86 C2, CK3
87-88 R2, RV3
Case, differential (4.56 ratio and above, exc. G80) part number 6258340

This manual doesn't list the G/P chassis, although my '85-86 did. This is the first time I noticed the difference. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know, not really what you are asking, but that proves the 5.13's were available in trucks.

Thanks for the #s, thats helpfull to me, thats what i meant when i said " nail down"something.offered a price on the 14 hes not biting, i might have to use an ancient chineese smelling salt to wake him.still looking.YT HP /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

hey dyeager.....i know this was a long time in the running,but was wondering if you could give us some more help on some codes.Thanks............Or anyone else who knows for sure,Jake

RPO code for 5.13's is HC7 (Harry said this already)
5.43=H23
5.83=HD1
5.86=HK9
6.17=H22

I need to backpedal on my previous post. Just because 5.13 is listed doesn't mean it was available in these trucks. Obviously some 14 bolts had them, but from what I can see in this manual re-reading it, 5.13's and higher were NOT available in "our" trucks. In my previous post it is clear that the manual is talking about what will *fit* the particular carrier, not what the axle itself was available with in *these* trucks.

The axle codes are listed (the one stamped into the axle tube) in the parts manual and the highest one is 4.56 for 1985,'86,'87, and '88. PERHAPS with the later trucks having the 4L80E the 5.13's were available, but going back to what the manual said, for the above 4 years, I'm going to say 5.13's were NOT available in these trucks.

They were obviously available in something that had a 14 bolt, but not the C/K/R/V trucks for those 4 years.

Wow.It sounds like a needle in a haystack sort of deal lol.I wish somehow we could *TAP* into this grey area because it sure could save a few guys some money .I see its getting a little warmer though.I wish there was a for sure way to tell.It sure would be nice to just drop a deroit into one of these things and be on your way.SO.........where are all the darn 513s?????They have to be somewhere!!!!!!I want to find out!!!If what Tim said was true,mabey a newer rear would be good to find from a wrecked vehicle or something.Again,dyeager and the rest of you,i appreciate the much needed help!!!LETS FIND THE 513s GUYS!!!!!!!Mabey someone could find a "fleet"of trucks with a specific year,that would help.Anyway,one has to pop up sooner or later,Yours truly HP /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

where do you look for an RPO code? is that something in the vin?

For the most part the 5.13's are in the "P" series Vans and wierd industrial application chassis . Look for the vans that look like bread trucks - they come in SRW & DRW versions. Not all had maximum gear but a lot of them did.
Also some motor homes had them too - I have even seen a 10 lug version of the 14 bolt and it had an open carrier and 5.13's in it out of a motor home chassis.

It is my opinion that the easiest way to find a set of GM 5.13 gears in a 14 bolt is to look for a "P" series Van ......
Tom

On our trucks the RPO code sticker is in the glove box . The older trucks had the description beside the codes but the later stuff just list the codes themselves.

What year was that? Was the axle shaft bolt-in, or cogged with the tin retainer plate?

I've dealt with a P30 motorhome chassis before - it was a '78 - with the 10-lug wheels and discs. But it was a Dana 70HD with 4.56's.

The other P30 axle I see a fair bit (the newspaper delivery trucks around here) is the 11,000 lb drop-out (Rockwell?) with the square axle tubes. Its also 10-lug & disc, but with 5.29 or 5.83 ratio.

The motor home chassis that I saw the 10-lug/14FF in was around a 1995,6,7 or 8 - somewhere in the mid 90's .
I never did see the shaft retention method so I don't know if it was splined at the hub or bolted ( it had the chrome hub cover on it ) ????
I had always assumed that it was one of those Rockwell rear axles because of the 10 lug but one day we all got into a big heavy duty axle discussion and ended up looking under a friends new motor home and I just about fell out when it was a GM 10.5 center section .
It had the normal large disc brakes ( same calipers as our Dana 60's ) and the tubes looked like they were regular 14 bolt size ( around 3-3/8 or 3-1/2 in diameter ) .
The motor home was not that big (no bigger than a P series chassis but not real big ) and it had the five lug front steering axle / 454 engine / and an Alison tranny .

I can find out more info on that motor home if needed - the guy who had it is a motor home freak and would love it if someone asked about one of his old RV's.
Down here in Florida we are in the old people retirement capital of the world so RV's are EVERYWHERE !!!! /forums/images/graemlins/histerical.gif
