Is there a way of telling if I can use lower than 4.11 gears? I heard that there is a break from 4.11 and 4.56 just wanting to know which one I have.

The best way to tell what gear ratio you currently have is to pull the diff cover and turn the ring gear until you see a bunch of numbers then take a pic and post it here and we can tell you what year the gears are and what ratio they are. Being you're a new member you wont be able to post pics until you have a certain number of post count (15 I think) so just look for the numbers that would be like 41-10 which would be a 4.10 gear ratio. The most common gear for a 14ff is 3.73 and 4.10.

41-9 = 4.56
41-10 = 4.10
41-11 = 3.73
41-12 = 3.42
42-13 = 3.23
 
It had the 41 10 so must be a 4.10, but does that mean I cant run 4.56 gears? Sorry about all the questions but this is my first 14 bolt

You will have to run a thick gear if using that same carrier that currently has the 4.10's on it.
 
is there any disadvantages to the thick gear? And do you guys run disc brakes on them or leave them drum? This rig will be in mud not rock crawling if that makes a difference

I've heard that the thick gear is stronger. Most everyone goes to disc in the rear and especially if running mud.
 
The disk brakes are easier to clean the mid out after running mud. It also saves around 100 pounds over the drums.

i've beaten the hell out of my thick 4.56 r&p so far and no carnage. burnouts on dry pavement, brakestands, etc etc on 38's. more material should equal more strength, i would think.
