I changed out the gear oil in the rear end of my truck today. The service manual says the capacity is 3.25 quarts. I cannot even get 3 quarts in before the lube starts spilling out of the fill hole.

I know it is viscous stuff, so I let it sit for about 20 minutes and tried to add some more, but it just spilled right out of the fill hole. I even went on a short drive around the block, thinking that driving around might help get the oil into the axle tubes and whatnot. That seemed to help, and I got a little more into the diff before it started to spill out, but it still wont even take 3 quarts, much less 3.25. Is there a trick to getting the full 3.25 quarts in?

Are you checking the fluid level while the truck is on level ground? You cannot be jacking up the rear axle and then checking.

I am doing this in my driveway, which has a very slight angle towards the street, but it's about as level as I am going to get.

Sure you arent mixing pints into the mix somewhere?

The manual does say 6.5 pints capacity, but the oil is in 1 quart bottles so it is easier for me to think of it as 3.25 quarts.

I know the axle tubes hold some lube, that is why I went for a little spin around the block, to get the lube from the pumpkin in to the axle tubes, and it kinda helped. Besides, if I pull the axle shafts, and put the rest of the lube in, what is to keep it from spilling out of the no longer closed axle tubes?

You need to do this on FLAT GROUND. This is the reason you aren't getting enough in there.

That depends, if his truck is facing up the slight angle, then it would actually hold more.

What I have done is, when you are DRAINING the old fluid, to let it all drain out, then jack up one side a little, and let it drain more for a little bit, then let that side down and jack up the other side and let it drain for a little while. Then bring it back to level and fill it up. The reason it might not be taking that much is because you probably didn't get all the old oil out.
