14b FF Ring Gear Install Help

I think filing the ring gear is only suggested because it's already been installed a time or 3. Maybe we should all be doing it (if even in the spirit of "can't hurt"), but I think the majority of new gears just get thrown on. If it was needed for the gear to be useable, it should have happened at the factory.

I’ve always thrown my carriers in the freezer for an hour or so, people get in trouble trying to draw the ring gear on with the bolts

That's what I say. For $300+ for a ring gear set it should have a true and flat surface. Almost seems they get it out of the cast, cut the teeth, black oxide it and ship it out.

I did that originally with this carrier but I found later the 14b ring gear fits without freezing...

My Dana 60 was super tight and had to freeze carrier.

I agree with this, but nothing is what it used to be and almost everything needs work to be right these days

I have a diamond stone on the way....gonna file it on Sunday. Also, I am going to put a different ring gear in and see what readings I get

Agreed that all gear sets should come ready for installation but reality is that ya’ just can’t trust even a new set; no matter who was the gear cutter.
I’ve been in the gear sett’n up game since 1989 and was taught from day one to ALWAYS verify carrier and ring gear mating surfaces - I’ve always just used an assortment of large flat files since ya’ can’t really get a stone on the entire carrier flange surface.
No sense in only putt’n a file on only one mating surface and not the other.
