A stroll down memory lane! :D

Thats what I thought, too. :doah:

Someones been browsing waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in this forum. What a way to dredge oldies. :D

At least this proves that some people DO use the "SEARCH" feature... You'll never hear me complain about an old thread that resurfaces with new questions, it proves that someone is willing to do their own homework instead of just posting up a new thread! :waytogo:

BTW -> "Chevyin" now owns the truck in question and may even know the whereabouts of that front axle. Might be worth sending a PM if you are interested in more details.

I bought the body/frame, I did not buy the axles. I did however see the 14bt front axle when I picked up the truck, it was sitting out in fornt of the shop with a for sale sign on it along with the rear. I have no idea if it sold after that or what happened to it.

they could also be hitting the "last" button on the pages of threads

ACTUALLY, it got turned into a rear steer axle. But thanks for jumping to conclusions!:D

Is it installed on your truck? I'd like to see how it looks and how the steering is hooked up. If it's really worth it then that might be another project I can do on my rig. I'm bored again so I'm looking for more ideas.

EDIT: I see the pics in your webshots but what I really want to see is the steering linkage from the axle to the steering wheel.
And what axle shafts are you going to use? I assume D60 shafts?

so all lo pinion front ends are really pulling on the backside/coast side of the gears? why would gm or any other manufacturer do this, I'm going to pull my front diff cover now, i have to study this more!

so,if our LP d60 fronts are indeed driving on the coast side of the gears, could you put reverse rotation gear set in regular axle and the gears be contacting on the drive side of the gears?

Not mine, I parted the blazer.

This is the best pic I have of the steering. Sky Mfg hi steer crossover. Steering box to drop pitman to drag link to steering arm to tie rod. Outers were going to be D60s inners custom made.

Most all low pinion fronts drive on the coast.

So you didn't get far into the rear wheel steer project?

The issue isnt the cut of the gear, its the placement of the pinion. On a lo pi front axle, when the pinion rotates, it wants to push down - away from the gears. When its placed on top, it push down and into the gears creating more contact area.

In the rear axle its the reverse. lo pinion will push up into the gears and hi pin. will push up away from the gears.

Its hard to explain but imagine the direction the pinion has to spin in relation to the ring gear. Now with no support on the end of the pinion, and under load, what way will it deflect?

See, I made it as a front and was going to make one for the rear, when things changed and I had to get rid of the whole Blazer. When I parted it out it was purchased to be installed as a rear steer axle and since, others have asked me about it because they too were interested in a rear steer axle.

Good to see you!!

When I started snooping and pooping here two years ago, I remember your awesome rig just before you started the parting-out.

Thanks for the compliments man. Haven't been on in forever, guess thats what happens when you buy a Cummins. I do miss my blazer greatly.

Ahh I get it now. Thanks. I'll start researching some other sites on this. I've been interested for a long time but then forgot about it until this thread came up.

Yep, low pinion front axles ride on the coast side of the ring gear and are much weaker (something on the order of 40% IIRC)

The OEM used low pinion front because it was cheap and easy (same diff as the rear). Developing a HP diff costs lots of money, apparently only Ford thought it was worth it.
