Hello all,
Like the title says, is there any difference between a 14bff in a 3/4 ton truck vs. a 1 ton truck? Sorry if it's a newbie question, but hey, i'm a newbie. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

Thanks for the info!

Spring perches are different widths and the shock mounts are opposite but thats it. If you have a 1st Gen you want a 1 ton for direct bolt-in, if you have a 2nd Gen you want a 3/4 ton for direct bolt-in.

I don't think there is a big difference, maybe gear ratios, I have not hada lot of experience with 14"s. anyone else /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif

73-01, get a 3/4 ton 14bff
69-72, get a 1 ton 14bff

The other difference is shock mounts (mentioned above) and brake size.

3/4 ton's had either 11.5 or 13" brakes
1 tons had 13" brakes with wider shoes then the 3/4 variety

The other thing to look for is the open carrier or govlock carrier. Govlocks aren't as desireable. They are weaker and not a fulltime locker. You can identify by

Govlock: G80 vehicle option code & 3 pin crossshaft in the carrier

Open: 4 pin crossshaft in the carrier.

cool, last question say you found a 14ff with 4.10 or 4.56's with a gov-lock can you swap those gears on the open carrier?

sorry for the hijack.

Yes, as long as the new carrier is the 4.10 or the 4.56 carrier. They are two different carriers.

4.10 and down (numberically) and 4.56 and up are two seperate carriers. 4.56 gears will not work with a 4.10 carrier and vice versa.

So if you get 4.56 gears in a factory gear set you must swap in a 4.56 open carrier.

4.56-5.13 is one carrier
4.10-3.__ is another. They will not interchange between carriers.
