I noticed the rim on my truck was filled with oil, it is coming from the axle seal on the passanger side, if I pull those 8 lugs holding the axle in out. Is the seal right behind there? Will the axle come right out after I take the bolts out?

Thanks
-Steve-

The axle will come right out but you need to remove the hub from the spindal to replace the hub seal.

If it's gear oil leaking past the axle bolts or flange, you can use a little rtv under the head of the 8 bolts and see if that helps.

Mine had the same problem, but it was caused by me overfilling the diff. Since I rotated the pinion up for a CV shaft, the fill plug went up a lot higher and was causing oil to seep out from behind those bolts.

Thanks guys, dont think I overfilled it, so im going to attempt the seal change tomorrow.

Excuse the ignorance, but whats it take to remove the spindle from the hub?
And whats rtv?

Is the oil on the outside or inside of the wheel? If it's only on the outside then pulling the 8 bolts holding the axle and replacing the metal shim gasket may cure your problem. If the inside of the wheel is coated with oil THEN you need to pull the hub/drum and replace the hub seal but in order to do that you'll be removing the axle as well so replace BOTH the hub seal and the axle gasket. I use Ultra black RTV on both sides of the axle gasket and make sure the hub surface is clean and free of any high spot and the same with the axle flange that meats the hub surface.

The spindle seal is behind the hub. You need to remove the wheel bearings to take the hub off and then replace the seal that's pressed into the back of it.

But that seal will only fix a leak in the back of the wheel. If the oil is leaking onto the outside of your wheels and is coming from under the axle flange with the 8 bolts in it, that's a different seal (axle seal).

And whats rtv?

Silicon sealant\glue\goop

The oil is only on the outside of the wheel, so looking at the truck I sww it, if I get underneath it and look behind the wheel its dry.

So it should just be the axle seal right? Pull those 8 bolts, pull axle, change seal?

Almost, it'll be closer to this:

Pull those 8 bolts, pull axle, oil spills all over your driveway, clean it up, change seal?

I'd recommend pulling the wheel off an putting a drip pan underneath. :)

You may also want to jack the side you are working on about 3-4 inches higher so the oil drains out of that side.
