I need pics of an open 14 bolt carrier and a gov locked or posi rear end. I can't tell at all what mine is. I'm used to looking at 10bolts. The whole ring gear in the center thing is messing me up.

EDIT: Going with a mini spool on a DD. Need some suggestions for something cheap. Also looking to lock the front. should i spool that also? Or go with a lunchbox locker?

sounds like you got a gov lock.

can you see little screens? about a penny diameter? three main cross pins on the carrier?

Well it's all back together now. But it seems like there were just a few holes I could see through on the drivers side. But I saw some teeth. But a ten bolt posi has two spider gears if I remember correctly.
 
Best way to tell is count the number of spider gears in the carrier. You can't see the spider gears while the carrier is assembled, but you can see the pins they ride on around the circumference of the carrier, under the ring gear.

There's 3 in a G80 and 4 in an open carrier. I don't know of another way to visually spot the difference without removing the carrier.

These are the simplest axles to work on in my experience. Read the 14 bolt bible. Assuming the gears are properly set up now, just count the rotation of the collars to remove it and you should be able to reassemble it back after installing a locker without having to go through a full gear setup.

Well next time i have it apart i'll check it. Or i can go bury it in some mud and see if i evenly coat both sides of my truck. =]

I suppose you could do it the obvious way and just turn the wheel and try to get it to lock up. It's a centripetal system so it's kinda hard to get it to engage by hand sometimes (it's like a 300 rpm difference or something, but in practice seems to function more from centripetal acceleration rather than velocity). Best way in my experience is to jack up both wheels and have a person on each side spin the wheel as fast as they can in opposing directions. A g80 will lock abruptly with a clunk and then function as a spool until rotational force is released.

If it's a g80 on anything but a mall-crawler, I'd suggest either removing the actuator so that it functions as an open diff, or welding it before wheeling it at all. My most recent 10.5 g80 was pulled from a low-mile single cab 1-ton with a small block in it (by no means a big, heavy powerhouse). The toothed side gear that runs the actuator was already missing a bunch of teeth as it was. It's no surprise that they are so fragile when used even on mild fire roads.
 
hard on tires. barely noticable otherwise. way better than a lockrite or other cheap lockers.
if it was mine, detroit or spool. bar none.
i have a mini spool in my k5. i drove it everyday for 4 years. makes it drive straighter with my swampers on. no popping, or unloading. smooth. but it does wear tires abit more. i still wore out the front tires first, and had more than 50% left on the rear.

i said that as more of a joke. but sorta serious.
 
This might be an obvious comment, but do you have the codes from the glove box sticker? Mine had the G80 code written in there, or did they only have those stickers after a certain year?
