14bff mini spool suggestions? *pg.3

Not too far, do you know where New Braunfels is? About 20 miles north of there.

Nice! Well i live in north austin so your about an hour or so away!
Do you know of any good wheelin spots around? We have the VFW property up here and a place in avery ranch. but both are getting built over with houses. =/

Cool, no the best wheelin spot around here I knew of was a place called devils den in san antone but it got fenced up because people were dumping bodies there:( I don't actually have a K5, I do have a 85 K20 Im doing a frame off on but im afraid I wont be doing any extreme wheelin with it.

Bodies? That could be a slight problem. haha. And i can respect a restoration project. i wish i had the time and energy to do that. I have a Nova sitting here waiting to be started on. For 3 years now. =/

Anyone suggest a cheap mini-spool? That sounds like the way to go since my axle is actually strong enough now. And the Bighorns are a pretty hard compound tire so they shouldn't wear too fast. And if they do i can groove 'em.

Yeah it sucks that people had to screw it up for everyone because it was a really cool place, I think theirs some videos on youtube of it though. Yeah the restoration's been fun but im running out of time and energy and oh yeah money. :)

no special sauce neede with a gov bomb. there arent any clutches. the additive would be for a clutch type diff.

look at this one. its what i, and my brother have. mine is about 6 years old. no problems. he has a macine shop make themjust for him, and aparently that keeps the price low.

Eh, there are cheaper ones out there.
And im sure i could spin some out on our lathe but im not sure about the splines. Weld in?

its not a limited slip. its a locker. it does have clutches, but they are not used to attempt to keep the axleshafts at the same speed like a trak-loc or power-lock.
they are used to engage the locking mechanism, and thats it. they dont need special sauce because the dont do the actual "locking" part

so yes there are clutches. and no they dont need special lube

I thought a g80 was a limited slip.

thats why they go BOOM. they have weights and little gears and all sorts of stupid s**t in them. when one axleshaft spins faster than the other, centrifical motion sends weights out that basically "catch" parts connected to the other axleshaft. (there is more to it than that) add bigger tires and horsepower and watch the parts fly.
i actually cant remember seeing one without damage. there is one worm gear looking piece that always seems to be missing teeth. atleast on the 14b. on a 10b everything grenades, not just little stuff.

I will second that there are no clutch paltes in a gov lock, it is a completely mechanicaly limited slip device that uses centrifugal effects to engage the locking devices....
....wait it does have clutches??? just saw 1beatk5's post. If has any clutches regardless of what they're used for wouldn't they wear out eventually? I'm confused I thought they were all springs and stuff with zero clutches.

O.k. Found this...very cool animation of it all working.

Do you need a additive for the gov loc?

You do NOT need any additive in a Gov-lock. Go look at any owner's manual or service manual and it will specifically say to NOT use additive in a Gov-lock. This is one of those questions that has been beaten to death over and over again.
