1980 14blt drum, with 2 thin nuts and cage to lock nut system in place, is on the bottom, vs 1986 M1031 system on the top picture or on the right on the second picture with 1 thick nut with key and C clip.

The spindle on both the 1980 and 1986 has the same stick out length and thread for the nuts are the same also.

Which is a better system?

Thank you,

Ed

Id go with the key myself. Used both no issues

For function, no matter. For ease of use, the single thick nut by a mile. Been there, done that, many times.

I have never seen the thick nut, key and snap ring before, I was surprised with it when I removed the drums,
Thank you all for you help,

Where can you get this key, snap ring and thick nut where talking about?

my 78 Full float is not like it but has 2 thing nuts with cage system.

Parts stores sell them. There was a thread somewhere not long ago with the numbers. Dorman makes them.
