I just opened up the 14 FF that I bought Whoever had it before me welded the spider gears together. The question I have is in order to fix this do I need to order a whole new carrier plus gears? I want to go with 4:56 gears.

4.10 to 4.56 is the case split (not counting "thick" gears and all that). To switch from one to the other requires a carrier. If you could cut the spider gears out, and not damage the carrier, and its infact a 4.56 carrier, then theoretically you could use that carrier. But I highly doubt all of that will work in your favor. Never has for me anyways.

Personally, I cant see the thought of purchasing spider gears. I would just Detroit/Spartan/ect locker it, as they just replace the spiders, and buy a new/used carrier. But, you can go the route you mentioned as well and get all new or used spiders and such. Also, make sure sure sure you will be happy with 4.56s. As its not cheap to do this, so get what you want the first time.

yep 4:10's and you need a replacement carrier.

New carriers are expensive. Buy used and save coin. And I'd also buy new ring & pinion as I would put too much stock into used sets even though lots of people do.

What do you mean thin gears?
Factory 4.56 gears are "thinner" and won't work on 4.10 carriers. Hence the reason they call the aftermarket 4.56 gears "thick" so you can fit them on 4.10 carriers.

You can still get them just about anywhere. And aftermarket, too. Call up Randy's Ring & Pinion and be specific with what you're looking for. I wouldn't buy any carriers from him, period. Expensive!
