14FF carrier/gear question??

I can't say right here. Take it to PM's. I will get in trouble for breaking forum rules since this is the Garage and not the For Sale forum.

So to confirm, when going from 4:10 to 4:56 on a 10.5” 14FF “Thick” gears are required? For some reason I thought the 4:10 carrier would take standard 4:56 gears….Maybe I am thinking of D60’s??

The reason I ask is I installed a pair of axles (D44/14FF) into my Burb a few months ago. After months of chasing “wondering” issues it turns out the D44 I pirated from my dad's old wrecker is bent or has some major issues at the ball joints (camber is way off and the right side sits back further than the left like if the tube is bent). I have another D44 left over from the D60 swap into my K10 a few months ago but it has 4:56 along with a TrueTrac .

That said, the Burb will be getting the K10's old 4:56 D44 shortly but now I need to install 4:56 gears into the rear axle. I already have a used set of “thick” 4:56 gears lying around that I can use. If it is true that a 4:10 carrier requires “thick” gears would save me some bucks and I would be happy and the wife would be happy to not hear me say I need to spend a other few hundred :haha:

Sorry for the hijack

The carrier split for FF 14 bolts is 4.10 and down and 4.56 and up.

That means that 3.21, 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10 FF 14 bolt gears all use one carrier, while anything 4.56 and deeper uses a different carrier.

Because most 14 bolts start with 4.10 or higher (numerically lower) gears, and most people re-gearing them want deeper gears, the aftermarket came up with the concept of "thick" gears. The thick gears will fit a 4.10 and down carrier (most common by far) but allow you to run 4.56 or deeper gears without changing the carrier. The "thick" 14 bolt gears are the vast majority available for anything 4.56 and deeper.

Cool! Thanks Chris

Now, I just have to find the 4:56 “thick” gearset I have stashed away someplace… Looks like a cheap and easy 4:10 to 4:56 gear swap in the Burbs future :haha:
