In reference to one of your original questions; don't shave the bottom hole off!!! What I did was attach the cover to the housing and grind the housing down just until the "bar" at the bottom is gone. You can take more material off, but you don't want to have a cover bolt head as the low point to snag and take a bunch of abuse.
anyone know what the torque is supposed to be on the retainer bolts? i'm installing my detroit tomorrow...

the two bearing cap bolts are 135 lb ft and the retainer bolt is 20 lb ft.
Whatever happened to 78Suburban?

they are 120 lb ft using an alternate pattern to torque them.
