I have a 77 k5 blazer it has a 14 bolt ff in rear with the stock dana 44 front. The gear ratios match 4.10 but I want to convert the front to 8 lug and buy new wheels. Im stuck with 15 cause I bought new bfg 35s it looks ok until you notice the front is 6 lug. The wheels I have all match but the chrome is shot. I was wondering if anyone knows what I need to do to convert front such as a whole axle or just hubs ans whatnot. Ive been tokd alot of diffrent things. Im 32 and been mechanical all my life so its not a lack of ability but beleive it or not this is my first 4x4. I always had camaros or mustangs etc... And once I get it converted where is a good place to get wheels,
thanks ahead of time.
Rick.

You should be able to find an 8 lug d44 at a junk yard or check craigslist and take the hub assy off. Im not sure if the spindles are different or not but i would grab those as well. Then just swap out. And on the wheels, you could order some steel wheels from summit pretty cheap. I didnt realize 15s fit on a 14bff with the drums, but ive never had one.

my k5 has a 3/4 ton dana 44 from a 77 k20. eight lug dana 44, it was a really easy swap.

i've also got 15 inch steel rims on a 14bff, also from the 77 k20.

i did this swap a while ago, the problem with the dana44 is the inner shafts differ from the 10 bolts as the housings are offset differently which is why only the stub shafts are interchangable. Around here the parts became scarce and I couldn’t find junk yard replacements. If I were you I would run an 8 lug 10 bolt, that way replacement inner/outer shafts are a dime a dozen. The only differences between the 6 and 8 lug axles are the spindles are larger with bigger bearings. If you don’t plan to wheel the truck hard then you can always just find a 10bolt/44 and steel everything from the spindle out and swap it onto your axle.

Ive got 15x10s with either 4 or 4.5" backspacing on my 3/4 ton. Rear fit with drums and after I converted to disks. Front took lots and lots of grinding. Not so much on the caliper but mostly the caliper bracket.

You can get 15x8 steel rims with 2.75 back spacing 8.6.5 on 4wheelparts.com web site for $55.99 each.

The grinding is no big deal. I have done it to a Dana 44, and I have a Dana 60 that has had it done.

ya a dana 44 or corp 10 bolt not bad.

but on a 60 its a LOT to remove . i did some on a set of 3.25" b/s rims 1 time :doah: that sucked lots of grinding and i have seen how much you need to do for the typical 4.25-4.5" b/s and not safe in my book .

Meh, the Dana 60 calipers and caliper brackets are MUCH heavier than the 10 bolt or Dana 44. Until I see pictures of one that has failed due to grinding, I am not buying the "unsafe" theory.

I exploded a stub shaft and lockout on the river this summer in my Dana 60 in my '90 K5. I had to limp it a few miles off the river to take it home. The bearings exploded in the process and took out the spindle nut. I drove off with the caliper and caliper bracket being the only thing holding my left front wheel on.

I know of a '77 2wheel drive blazer you could trade for, and not have to deal with it then. Probably the way to go.

Yeah or I could buy my buddies axle out of his chassis since itll never get done anyways... Just kidding don!:dunno:
