1500HD as a tow rig?

Anybody out there running 285/75 R16 tires on the stock 2500HD aluminum rims? I want to run E rated BFG all terrains 285/75 R16's on my stock alloys. I went to the tire place, and they said the tires won't ever be balanced due to the width of the tires being to wide for the rims. Anybody out there running this tire/rim combo, how's it working out for ya? Also, I am planning to get the speedo recalibrated for the tire size (at the dealership), has anybody out there had difficulty with a warranty claim due to putting on larger than stock tires? The dealer says it won't cause a problem but, you now how they'll say whatever it takes to make a sale sometimes...(no offense meant to dealership guys out there, I used to work at one). Thanks for info!:D

I worked at a tire shop where people would always ask us to mount 285's on the stock wheels. it pinches them to much and crowns the tread. it will ride terrible and feel unstable compared to a wider wheel.

When I put 305's on my 1500 the dealership wouldn't warranty the idler and pitman arm that wore out under 30K miles. I had only had the tires on for 10K miles.

Now I work at a dealership and they still won't warranty something that was effected by a non stock component. the tires do not completely void the warranty, just the parts they have an effect over like hub assemblies.

I will never lift an IFS truck again. they are not designed for big tires. I have friends that also own lifted IFS trucks and they all have the same issues as me. idler and pitman arms, hub assemblies, balljoints.

I doubt 285's wil even fit, my 265's on my '81 K30 barely clear with 16x8 aftermarket wheels. I think you will need a leveling kit to clear 285s, don't 245's come factory?

Well, I ended up deciding to put on 265/75 R16 goodyear wrangler silent armors. Thanks for all the info everybody! It was a big help on deciding what size, looks like the 265's will work better than 285's, the 265's barely fit at the fronts of the front wheelwells (at the bumper). A leveling kit would be cool but, I think I will leave the truck how it is so it will sit well when towing. We run 265 silent armors on the NCDOT IMAP 3500's (SRW) and they seem to work very well and I don't think we have had any warranty claim troubles, at least not that I know of. I think I am going to be making a warranty claim soon, my passenger door speaker is buzzing. Other than that, the truck is awesome! It looks and rides great (esp. with the new tires), sounds great (gotta love the sound of the turbo spooling up!), and hauls some serious rearend! Now all I need is Rhino-lining and a tool box. Oh, also, I was wondering if y'all think it is necessary to recalibrate the computer for the 265's (it came with 245's), would it be necessary? Thanks!:D
P.S. I will post pics once I can borrow my girlfriend's digital camera and then figure out how to post pics!

No pics yet (don't have an adapter that wil go from my girlfriend's camera to the computer). But, I did discover something I think is funny today, I think the new tow rig will fit in the garage! Glad I didn't buy a crew cab! There's too much junk in the garage to pull the truck in but, I did measure the truck and the garage. Truck: 19'1" Garage: 19'2" space available, I guess putting an ARB front bumper on would be out of the question, unless I want to put the frontend into the laundry room! :D I dunno, maybe I'll just keep it parked outside.

just dont' forget to take off your ball.......the garage door will thank you.

When i had the burb and it was that close, i screwed an old firetruck wheel chock into the concrete, so i would just drive up til that stopped me, instead of bashing teh wall :)

Anybody know where I can get a front diff skid plate, a transfer case skid plate, and a gas tank skid plate for my '07 2500 HD Silverado (the truck I keep on talking about but not posting pics of (they'll be up soon))? I did a google search and came up with nothing. I don't plan on fourwheeling the truck but, I would like to protect its soft underbelly!:D Thanks!

there wasn't a factory package? Unless you get someone to fab them, your prolly SOL on such a new truck. Can't exactly go to the salvage yard and steal them off a truck w/ different option packages.
