16 yr old w/ 84 4x4 blazer problems

Hey man, I live up in waco and go to baylor. If you need some help, let me know, I have aim. link is in my profile.

Good luck!

Hey man welcome to the site. I bought my 84 k5 when i was 17 im 19 now. It sounds your on the right track but feel free to pm me if you have any questions. Mines more of a frankinstine now lol but whos isnt have fun with your build

in all honesty, you're 16, the last thing you need is a huge lifted truck. learn to use and respect what you have now, and then modify it when you're ready to move up. i'm going to assume that a $500 truck is going to need alot of TLC. go through your entire brake system, and steering, tune up the existing engine. basically, make sure the truck is in 100% sound mechanical condition.

you should be able to fit 33s on your truck stock without much problem, and 4" with 35s on stock wheels is pretty common, no need for a body lift. also, keep in mind, your truck probably has 2.73 or 3.08 gears and a 700R4 in it from the factory. couple that with a set of 35s, and you're begging for the trans to die a quick death.

if i were to build a truck, for the purpose that you have laid out here, i would go with a set of 35" BFG Mud Terrains, a set of 4" Tuff Country or BDS springs up front, a 4" shackle flip in the rear and a pair of 3/4 ton axles (which 9 times out of 10 will carry a 4.10 gear) this should be a pretty well rounded combo, being both trail friendly, and reasonably well on the street, and small enough for an inexperienced driver to handle.

it is going to be a daily driver but if i decide to crawl some rocks one day i wanna be able to w/ no problems, my dad has an 02 avalanche w/ a 4 inch lift and 33s and he high centered on a small rock, i dont want that. lol
Your gonna put super swamper BOGGERS on a DD???? Not to flame you, but do you know how long they last on the street?? Unless your made of gold, or can afford $1000 worth of tires in 8000 miles....I would strongly strongly strongly suggest not running boggers on a dd. Looks like all you nees is some mtr's, bfg muds or allterrains, or something similar. Not boggers.....not on a dd.

If he wants to drive a lifted truck when hes 16.....go for it. I was 14 when bought my truck for $800. I wanted to lift it and needed to put an engine in it....i got a job and started making money to pay for parts. I let them accumulate in my garage for over a year until i was finally ready. The day I got my license...i was driving my K5 lifted 6" and on 37's. Not to this day (knock on wood) has it been wrecked while in my posession.

Good piece of advice on the TLC. I agree. If it was $500, it probably needs something to make it reliable. Unless yours was like mine (mine was $800 and only needed an engine, everything else was pristine), and it probably isnt, then its gonna need a thorough inspection and probably quite a bit of work. As said above, make sure everything is in sound condition before you start driving it on the road.

lookin into a new dd now, a 2000 chevy tahoe w/ 114,000 miles for $12,000 financed. not too sure yet but i think it would help if the blazer wasent a dd.

i doubt 500 dollars is a dd tho
I was just going on what he said. Trying to watch out for my fellow brother. :D Didnt want him to put boggers on a truck that he said was gonna be a dd, if he had no idea boggers wear out extremely fast on the road.

I concur. They arent very gas friendly.
If no dd, then go with boggers. Cant beat them in the mud, although they offer no lateral traction whatsoever. Still, boggers are crazy.

heres the plans so far,
14 bolt rearend (just to be safe and so if i lift later it will be done with)
the 35x12.50 super swamper boggers
3 inch body lift, and trimming anything i have to.
and maybe a 2 or 3 inch suspension lift.
any disagreements please feel free to point me in the right direction

I don't know of how hardcore your going to be offroading... but IMHO I would not put boggers on. They are a bada** tire, and give great traction off road, but personally i would go with a radial TSL Swamper or a nice Mud Terrain that would still give you good performance off-road, but you wouldn't have to worry as much about actually driving this truck.

i agree, if you want super swampers, go with a tsl radial. still very badass, but more userfriendly. IMO boggers are for mud drags, and thats it.

Im in agreement with the others now. If you have no experience wheeling, go with something other than a bogger. TSL radial or bfg mt would be much better for you. Boggers are only for the dedicated wheeler who trailers their truck to the trail and needs the ultimate in forward traction.

I have a comment, dont get a 3 inch body lift. Why would you want that? They do nothing but raise your cog...and look like crap too. Go with a shackle flip and a zero rate in the rear (5" total lift), and some 5.5" front bds springs...or 4" springs with a zero rate. It will look much better and perform much better. Your rig will be more capable as it will flex better, and its the same amount of lift that your after. IMHO, body lifts suck and have no use in the world of 4x4s. Maybe a 1" is alright, but i still dont like them.

I am in total agreement. Dont get the boggers or body lift. Honestly, for the type of terrain we have around here, get some BFG AT's and be done with it. If your 84 is like mine was, you have 3.08 gears and a 305. Get the 14 bolt like you said, (My uncle owns a Junkyard in Elm Mott and has some that will bolt in) but by all means dont get the body lift. They are cheap but everyone I know who got one, regretted it later and bought the lift anyways. Start small for now and you will be suprised how much fun you can have, but on second thought, I dont know where to wheel in Waco.

lol i love me boggers but it is not my 1st real 4x4 or set of hardcore tires by all means. they are awesome but in order to get lateral traction the must be grooved . i love my 44's can't wait to get'r in the bog and hammer out and whatnot. one thing to remember about boggers with a not built drivetrain they will find your weakest link that is in the truck ,also if you are nto going forward you "ARE GOING DOWN"

so keep that in mind

I have one question for all of you. What about his engine?????? If he goes out mudding rock crawling and gets into a jam. Is his engine going to have enough nut to spin those tires free?
Just a thought.
