if you arent backfiring through the carb, and you think your timing si good. check your vaccum if it is running crappy. my first time with a motor i didnt have the rockers tightened right and she ran like ****. 3 weeks later i decided to tighten the rockers over using one of many methods found on this board, and she came to life!

Just a thought and easy to check.

My burb started running badly, missing and giving me small "pops" through the carb. After checking timing, plugs and distributor and more I finally found a bad spark plug wire (they were new). Changed it and all was good again.

well, I have a brand new set of plug wires on it, and I've tried two old sets of plug wires.. all act EXACTLY the same.

I had one run (not well) at someware near 180 out. But everytime you tried to use the throtle it would backfire out the carb. I didn't think it was possible so I monkeyed around a bit before figuring it out.

I got a vaccume guage and a set of valve cover gaskets in my room right now. The vaccume guage is borrowed. I'm gonna prepare for a serious tuning/ troubleshooting day tomorrow. From reading this thread, I still haven't 100% ruled out being 180* out, so I will certainly try that first  Man that would be great.

I tried swapping my wires, starting the order off of the #6 spot on the dizzy, and I can tell you for sure, I am NOT 180* out  KABOOM :doah:

The previous owner of my K5 did this and I found it when I went to change the cap/rotor/wires. It ran better after I fixed his stupid ass mistake.

Your avitar is badass:haha:..as far as the 180 thing goes, ive always heard it will run fine 180 out.........

YOU'RE BACK!!!! wow.. How did you pull that one off? Which Avitar, the CK5 we know drama, or my Grill one I had for a few days? :eek1: Somebody made that Drama avitar on your behalf not too long ago, and I decided to steal it and use it as my avitar  Glad to see your back.... How did you do it...lol

Did you have your cam out ? I've seen the cam marks not lined up right and the cam be a 1/2 turn off . It acts like 180 off

we tried firing my motor 180* out and it wouldn't turn over and it backfired twice.. so from my experience, it won't start.

Absolutely, positively will not idle.

Would you actually believe the story of someone who didn't know whether or not their timing was 180 off or not!!!

There is no way an engine will run firing the plug at the end of the exhaust stroke. What is it supposed to burn? The exhaust valve is still open.

Thank you! I've been building these for many year now, and as of yet, when I drop one in 180 out, I'm lucky to get a back fire or even a cough, let alone start and run! Geez you guys, the laws of physics do not change.

I have always gotten a backfire at 180 out. When I dropped the engine in my Astro, it sparked just enough to backfire through the throttle body, and light the insulation on fire. Pulled the dis up switched 180 and fired and ran, then just had to dial in the timing. No engine I have ever seen is going to run when 180 out.

Just curious, because I've heard so many different stories on this. Several people have sworn to me that a vehicle will idle fine at 180* out, and run ok untill you drive it under load. Then other people tell me that it will backfire out of both ends and never run at all. So have any of you seen a vehicle run when the dizzy has been dropped in 180* out?
Backtrack. What have you done that makes you suspect the dizzy is 180* out?

I clicked the wrong button........:doah:

anyways last month when I swapped the SBC in my '73 had the dizz 180 out....would crank and burp and fart, but no runny runny.
