kennyw submitted a new Build:

1950 International L series

20180311_135357-jpg.259940

After some wheeling and dealing this truck is coming home with me this weekend. The basic plan will be a 4x4 conversion. The stock engine runs but the brakes do not work.

Nice, I love old iron. What are the plans? Restomod? rat rod?
Short term plans are to get the brakes working and make it driveable. The motor starts and runs currently.

Still formulating long term plans but expecting a 4x4 conversion. It will have to have some power and some modern conveniences for the wife to be happy with it as well. The original engine put out 90 HP new, I know she wont be happy with that after getting out of a 550 HP Corvette. A built 5.9L Cummins for space or 7.3L Powerstroke to keep it International are top of my list for options. 5 or 6 speed manual transmission. It will probably see a Macco satin black paint job as well until we can afford a real paint job.

That would be the best engine for an international but that sucker is big and heavy.
Too much for this frame and suspension
That is one of the hesitations I have with the 5.9L Cummins as well but it isn't as bad as a DT466.

Not sure what DT466 you were looking at but they are more like 1700 lbs depending on how its setup and they are long. I'm not a Cummins swap fan but one would work in there or a International DTA 360. They are 1200 lbs dry weight but that varies depending on how they are set up. There once was a place in PA doing a bunch of swap parts to put them in Ford Super Duty trucks but I saw that in a thread from a bunch of years ago. Plus you gotta get one with the "better" injection pump or swap it and the pulleys need machine work to shorten them up. Id personally go with a 4BT cummins or another small diesel if you want to go the oil burner route. This is a DTA 360.

Defiantly the perfect scenario for either a 4bt Cummings or a 4bd1t Isuzu engine. Honestly all of them are likely to twist the frame into a pretzel. The 4cylinders will do it too but less chance if you keep your foot out of it.
