It all started with Larry giving me a heads up on an 8.1 for sale. After talking with the guy I learned it was in his GMT 400 series until it was involved in an accident then he installed it in this 57 medium duty that is mounted on a 2000 Chevy G30 van chassis. After seeing some pictures I was pretty sure I was going to end up buying the whole thing so I drug the trailer with me to check it out. He had done a tremendous amount of work and for a couple of different reasons decided to sell. At this point the cab is mounted on custom mounts, the brake/clutch pedal and steering is partially done. While at first glance it appears most of the hard work is done, I have built enough vehicles to know that is not quite the case. I am not taking anything away from the seller, as I said he has done some great work, but from here to completion there is still a lot of work that needs done.
Tired of typing so here's some pics.

Dang, you cleaned house. Lots of parts. So what's the grand plan here? Flatbed? Rollback? Camper?
Definitely a lot of parts. Extra doors and a 1/2 ton front clip with a good grill I can use to trade for some things I will be needing. The front fenders are usable and although one does have a dent in the eyebrow they are not rusted out like most. Also a few extra 8.1 parts and hardware I needed for my other 8.1

I have been designing a 1 hydraulic cylinder rollback bed in my brain {and as of tonight on paper as well} that I believe will work in a light duty situation. Think 6500 lbs payload max. Definitely not something that would be an everyday/commercial use, but if I can drag the K5 Crawler to Moab and some of the mtn trails like Holy Cross, as well as haul the 53 Bel Air and TR6 to out of state car shows I will be a very happy camper. Most would not know it but Landoll actually produced a 15' rollback for an 84" cta chassis for light loads and tight inner city use. And I just so happen to have a hyd pto/pump for a 4500 I got from a very good friend of mine.

Have you thought about maybe building it as a ramp truck? Hodges truck beds has a few nice looking ramp trucks on their website.

I have been building this in my head for so long I have thought a lot about ramp bed versus rollback style. Ramp style would definitely be quicker and cheaper to build. Also if I went ramp style I have the facility/resources to build one versus buy one.

The rollback design in my head is actually a combination rollback/rolloff style hybrid.
Cost wise it would be quite a bit more after I buy the style of rollers I think might work.

I already have a hyd tank, new control valves, and pto and pump for the 4500 and even have a hydraulic cylinder that might work and worst case scenario cylinders really are not very expensive. Add the fact I have simply wanted to build one has me leaning towards a rollback.

So is it going to be 2wd or 4x4?

Great question and funny you should ask because right now it is already setup with a driver drop 241 with mech shifter and has all new drivelines already built. The previous owner planned on getting it drivable as a 2whl and converting to 4whl later. I do know where there is a Ford dwl 60 with 4.56s I can pick up reasonably priced.

Supposed to have good weather this weekend so I will finally be able to get started on it.
