I haven't done anything with the rear axle. I just keep the speed where it makes the least noise. 
I really wish you could buy a rebuild kit for the axle in it. Aside from that, I've been passively watching for a "new" axle. There's a small window of years, maybe just 67 & 68, that you could get Dana 60 rear axle with the coil spring rear suspension; that's what I'd really like to find. Otherwise eventually I'll swap in another axle. If the situation is right, I'd go with 1/2 ton, but I'm really hoping to keep it as original as reasonably possible.
I have a SM465 with a Gear Vendors overdrive that I hope to swap in at some point in the future. I sometimes wonder if the noise I hear might be from the transmission so I'll probably swap the SM465 in before I do a rear axle.
