1972 K5 "Boise" Blazer Build (advice appreciated) mostly DIY.

I hate to point this out since they gave you grief, but the parking brake strut bar spring on the painted one is upside down. Be sure the painted one in picture goes on left side.

Looking good :waytogo:

The tab on the spring needs to be up?

Having fun with this diff shimming thing...

OK I will flip them. I need to buy an inch lb dial torque wrench to set up this rear end.

if you are getting it to check pinion preload a beam bar in pd torque wrench works too. I use a K D beam with a 3/8" drive easier to adapt up to the big pinion socket sizes.

Thanks for the tips. Looks like O'Reilly's sells a pretty cheap bar dial, I'll pick it up tomorrow. Just realized I need to be measuring the shims in freedom increments, not metric.

I have the skid plate option which covers the transfer case with an extra cross member and plate below the Np205. In researching this I've learned that the gas tank skid plate is also part of the package which I can buy for $300 so I think I'm going to pick one up. My frame has a little shark fin on the drivers side that protects the shifter linkage it seems. It is only on the drivers side. I looked around and not every truck has the fin, is it part of the skid plate package? Is there any other skid plates I am missing? I think it's cool that this is sort of the first really "off road" package kind of thing ever offered so I want to piece it all back together.

In other news the front axle is coming along, just waiting on new caliper brackets and shields and it will be together this week. I ordered the Boyd aluminum fuel tank with the Aeromotive fuel pump so I will not be using the giant gas tank.

Never seen that shark fin goodie. Must not have been used on many, or survived the early techs

I believe the fin should keep the spring from going too far back. My understanding was it was part of a hard breaking safety thing. The front part of the spring hanger has a cup over it as well. And the fin is on the driver side only. So with it when you break hard, I think it shoves you to the right of the road, if I am remembering correctly.

Interesting. Sounds like 1960's engineering at its best!

Had to dig back through CK5 to find where I read it, here it is:

I'll install the fin and set it all the way back so it doesn't interfere. If it is a problem I will lose it.

I was told that the gas tank skid plate won't fit with the aluminum tank so that order got cancelled. I'll try to get my chassis and axles done this week so I can start putting the frame all back together. I want to have the truck back on its wheels soon just for the sense of accomplishment.

I have the front axle finished. Next week I need to make some modifications to my frame and to size up where my gas tank and everything needs to fit in. I will flip over the old body on the ground and rest the frame over it so I know how much room I have for everything. Once that is finished I need a little more paint and then the chassis should come together pretty quickly. I should have the engine ordered pretty soon as well.

Looking good! I like how detailed your work is.

Let me know if you want me to check if my distributor has the engine in stock you are wanting, I can check the prices for you if you desire.

My dad really wants the GM crate SP383 EFI turn key motor so I'm good with that.

I sent you a PM, they are showing 1 left but they don't have it at their facility yet.
