1973 C10 "The Purple Truck"

Basic build
Hopefully it’s built a little different.
I did notice an interesting detail that I just verified. The first engine sticker said "Remanufactured in Mexico" but if you look at the picture above the same sticker sales "Remanufactured in the USA" on this one.

This time the motor came to me painted orange. Double checked the numbers on the heads and block to make sure I'm getting the right thing.

It also has oil puddled in the lifter valley which I don't remember the other engine having.

I was thinking about getting one from them, possibly ships in august
ATK Performance and ATK are 2 different divisions of the same company. I noticed better reviews from the performance division.

It is frustrating that I had to put in a warranty claim and the wait involved. However, I must say it was pretty smooth. I just logged into the website and filed it and I had a call within 24 hours. They never questioned the install and I don't feel like I had to browbeat them into taking care of me. I had also noticed their warranty support had received some sort of award/recognition.

In talking to people and reading online, any engine rebuild can be a bit of a mixed bag on the results. I have my fingers crossed this new engine is going to work just fine.

I'm also excited to have my truck back. I'm hoping I'll have it running and driving by end of day tomorrow, but it's always the fiddly bits that end up eating time and taking longer than you expect.

They either ran this motor or at the very minimum it was primed with oil because there's oil in the lifter valley and up on the rocker arms.

I'm still going to prime again for my own peace of mind, but I definitely feel like they took some extra measures with this engine.

Looking at that picture reminds me I always had trouble torqueing the 2 intake bolts in the middle. I found the perfect combo; my torque wrench has a slim enough head I can get it under the fuel rail with the 3/8" version of these wrenches:

I have a open end crowfoot but it was just trying to slip off the bolt head. The flare nut version was perfect.

Did you do the math for the torque change with that? Or did you keep it perpendicular to the torque wrench?

For me the intake is like the header bolts, I keep it cinched with a small wrench after the first several heat cycles, not too tight, just don't let it loosen.

I didn't do the math. It's only an inch offset so it will add 2 ft-lbs at most which I figure is close enough to the standard deviation of a low end torque wrench. I doubt I'd be any more consistent going by feel.

Ultimately it probably will end up out the window because I likely won't fit the wrench in there on the driver side once the AC compressor is installed. I'll end up using an end wrench and tightening them to some point I feel is good.

I thought since everything had been installed once before it would just fall back together.......

Biggest mistake I've made was keeping an A6 compressor in this thing. That fokker is a fight to get all of the brackets together. Tried to cross thread 2 different captive nuts in the brackets so I had to chase threads. The same header bolts I took off are suddenly too short to grab enough threads to hold the rear support bracket for the compressor. Admittedly they are short, but they worked the first time. Now I gotta wait for new bolts to show up.

One way or another, it will be running by Saturday.
