The end of the tail pipes are at a 45° angle, not a straight 90° out. I was thinking the last picture makes them look like the are 90's.Angled!, the srtaight cut ends w 90* bends out the side are so 80’s.

Unfortunately, that one didn't work. The recess in the booster doesn't have a large enough diameter. I'm going to get a booster for the same application as the aluminum master cylinder and swap that in too. I figured they probably went to a different booster, because it was an improvement. Mine is pretty thin compared to the newer booster. Here ya go
Mine only backfires when I shift at 6200Update on the engine. Made it past the 1000 mile oil change and all is well.
After several tank fills I'm confident in saying fuel mileage has improved from about 11.25 to 13.3 mpg.
I think this morning I figured out the backfire on decel issue. I had been playing with the total advance and vacuum advance settings trying to get the most I could out of cruise timing. I backed off on both and it seems to have made the backfire go away. Also last week I verified base timing and it was a little high. I had set the timing on the engine stand but never double checked it after the engine was running. So technically there was a a couple more degrees of timing than the computer thought it was commanding.
Good news, get that OD trans with lockup converter and your mileage should improve even more.

You could hook the lockup ground to an old floor mounted dimmer foot switch, that's exactly what you were talking about right?Foot operated lockup?

With the way it was backfiring I was thinking there was no way in hell I could drag race it, it would have blown the muffler off when I let off the throttle.Mine only backfires when I shift at 6200
I'm looking forward to that. I may try and do gear swap at the same time and put in some lower gears.Good news, get that OD trans with lockup converter and your mileage should improve even more.
So far putting the correct nuts on the mounting studs has made a noticeable difference in how well it stops. But I do plan to get a newer model booster in the near future to get them both swapped.I guess I got lucky and somebody swapped mine at some point. I doubt they changed in 74.
I’d look for a burr on a pulley as well as misalignmentAfter having a good time with my new engine I tried to burn it down in the drive thru last night!
I was sitting there waiting on my burger, 90° outside, AC blasting, and I happen to notice ECT is 246°! I'm stuck waiting and watching. It hung at 246° the entire time never changing so I think maybe the sensor is bad but still freaked out.
I think maybe it needs airflow but moving down the road doesn't change anything. I parked and found the fan belt off and shredded. I'm glad to have electric fans to run while I wait for Nicole to bring me a belt.
Once I got home I crawled under the truck and thankfully the tattle-tells are still stuck in the expansion plugs. I dodged a bullet thanks to the overkill cooling system I frequently complain about.
I had a meeting last night so I haven't had time to take a closer look at the belt situation. Don't know if it's an alignment thing or what. It was a new belt I installed just a couple weeks ago. Maybe it was a bad part? It's a Goodyear belt so I thought it would be quality.
I was pondering that.I'd change your oil.
The way the belt is damaged, it does kinda look like there could be a burr or something.I’d look for a burr on a pulley as well as misalignment
I had Gates belts on there but the tensioner was threaded all the way out so I tried to find a belt that was just a tad shorter. If you look at the different manufacturers, they can vary a little. The Goodyear belt was about 1/4" shorter, so that's why I picked it. Ironically, I had to put an AutoZone belt on to get home. For V belts I like Gates the best, for serpentine I like the Goodyear Gatorback.
I remember back in the teenage days we installed some cheap autozone belts on a 468 BBC with a good cam, headers, intake, 4 barrel, etc. You could install them, tension them, and then romp the throttle one time and they would fly off.
Put on some Gates V belts and they never did it again.
