1973 K5 - My any purpose... any road build. (NEW PICS UPDATE 6-6-13 POST#92)

Just finished reading your thread. Nice! Would almost say I would love to have my '73 looking that good some day but then I would probably be afraid to wheel it. :D

Thanks for the compliments dudes, and Martin you are in luck (hope I don’t disappoint :D )

Sooo up above in my last few posts I mentioned that the truck exploded (again) over two years ago. Here is one of the last pictures I took before the 700R4 bit the dust:

After it blew up is sat in front of my house for over a year before the city came and put an orange sticker on it : /

I had to move it so I had it towed to my father in law’s property where it has sat for about the last 4 months.

It’s really hard to see the extent of it from these pictures but over the last four years the clearcoat has been completely destroyed by the Texas sun (it’s almost totally gone).
I guess that fresh socal paint just didn’t stand a chance in real heat :P Also while sitting out there it was damaged a little by the horses in the pasture.

On to the good news! I finally came up with the scratch to have Greg over at Phoenix Trans completely build the driveline for me.
I’m a firm believer in built not bought but I have to say that over the years I’ve done just about all the building there is and these days I’m so busy with work there is no way I could take on a job like this. I work really hard and it’s nice to be able to have someone else do some work for me for once. Plus it means more time with the wife and kid.
So this Monday I had it towed to the shop!

I mean just look at it! It even looks good on a tow truck lol. I’m so happy to be at the point where I will be daily driving this soon. Here is the list of what is getting done over the next 4 weeks:

Transmission (700r4)
New rebuilt T case (208)
Front Drive Shaft (new)
Rear Drive Shaft (new)
Install and regear new rear 14BSF w/ govlock
Regear front
Wheels
Tires

It's more than I thought I'd get done in five more years. I'm so excited I can barely sleep.

Thanks, that is basically my attitude about it. I'm just happy to see it getting wrenched on again.

As for the paint, I'm not sure how to proceed with that. I think its just going to cost too much to do anything about right now.

Pretty soon I may be in a position to do something about it myself though because we may be moving to a place with a lot more room to play. I used to do vinyl graphics and paint striping and spent a lot of time in body shops. I've always wanted to try my hand at painting.

So just a quick update.

Greg emailed me the other day and said that the entire rear case on the trans was cracked in half.

I couldn't help but think; Well there's yer problem! lol

I also opted to go with 4.11 gears. I'm going to give the 315/75-16 BFG's a try also and see how it drives. If I hate them I may sell them later and go back to the 305's.

Against the advice of your builder I might add :haha:

Yes it is true :P

I will clear your name here for future reference :D

I hope so. Greg was more concerned about the gearing making my engine perform underwhelmingly with the 35" tire.

It shouldn't be that bad with 4.11. Back in the mid 80's most come with a 305 and 3.73's and we run 35's

The truck has 4.11 in it now and is on 305/75-16's and I loved it so there will definitely be a noticeable difference.

And Greg is just looking out for me and wants me to be totally 100% happy with it.

I don't think you will notice a big difference in 2" with 4.11's

We'll see, I hope so. That is the bet that I made so I'm going to live with it for at least a while.

Well crap.

I've been looking for a new set of wheels just like the ones I have. I wanted to buy a full set, put new tires on them then take two off the truck and put tires on those for a trailer I'm planning on building in a couple months.

I just got off the phone with Summit (the only way I could get ahold of Eagle Alloy) and my wheel (1014-7866) is no longer made. They make this stupid wheel in about a hundred sizes why would they discontinue it for this bolt pattern/offset?

So WTF Eagle Alloy?

Ok rant over. So now I'm looking for ideas on wheels. I'm pissed these are no go, maybe my bro in law will want them for his SWB 2wd.
