I got a bumper bolt that is seized up and is real close to the gas tank....I've sprayed PB blaster and Deep Creep on it and let it sit for days...still won't come off...what would you do?

is it in a place you can get a socket on it. Find someone with a nice airgun that puts out 500FT/LBS or so and rip the bitch out. Or if you can get the longest breaker bar you can get on it and have a buddy help you push it. I would try extensively to rip the ****er out befofe resorting to massive amounts of liquid over the target while i cut/drilled as neccessary. If you are a little guy hold the socket on (im assuming its an akward position where the socket will want to fall off) while you have a big Mofo yank on it. I've only met a few bolts in my life i couldnt overpower with enough leverage and time :D.

p.s Aerokroil is the shet :waytogo:

I'm guessing that its either rounded off, or you cannot stop it from turning.

Chrome headed carriage bolt?

If you can find one, a nut splitter works great. If not, try drilling a small hole into the side of the nut dead center.
Once you get a hole through the nut into the bolt, keep using bigger drills until you drill the nut in half.

You mentioned the gas tank, I assume that is why you do not want to use a torch, dremal tool, or grinder.

BTW, this is what I was talking about. Very useful, very little known tool.
I am always amazed how many very knowledgeable mechanics never heard of it.

Actually it isn't rounded off or spinning...the problem is I don't want to ruin my bumper...yes it's one of those carriage bolts with the square shoulders to lock into the square "hole" on the bumper.
There isn't enough room to cut it off from the outside without ruining the bumper.

The drilling is a great idea I hadn't thought of....and I never heard of a nut splitter (makes me cringe when I say it) but I will try one or both these ideas.

How do you hold the bolt still? It will wallow out the bumper....

Why is always me that has the problems???

I used an extension with a wobbly socket on my impact. Then I had my dad put a glove on and push on the head of the carriage bolt to keep it locked in place. Popped them right out.

you said seized... that implies to me you don't have a big enough tool on it... it'll either crack-free, and turn out, which is where you need to worry about it wallowing out the hole... it won't do that when it's tight..

50% of the time you just snap the nut 1/2 off...

I guess I forgot to mention....the nut is halfway on....somebody must have cross-threaded it, forced it on and then it rusted together...or they used an impact wrench and crossthreaded it until it welded itself together....I'll get it if I have to cut it off

if its halfway on, you cant stick it out far enough past the bumper and cut the head of the bolt off?

Maybe with some needlenose visegrips I could pull it out enough to cut off the "dome"....it's gonna be close...I don't want to screw up my bumper..

ahhh come on now...I at least got a 50/50 shot that gas tank won't blow up! :eek1:

just tap it from the nut side with a hammer.. heck, if you don't have a cutoff wheel, a hacksaw would do it in a couple minutes...

I'll pop on the vice grips.....wipe the sweat from my brow....slowly pull the safety on the angle grinder....and say...."Smile you son-of-a BOOM!!!"

Hey chiefy, next time you just ask me which line to pull, right?
