If there is a gap between the bolt and nut, and you have room, use a SawsAll to cut the bolt between the nut and bumper.
Pour a generous amount of 90w on the bolt. That will prolong the life of your blade, and prevent sparks.

Also have someone hold in on the head with gloves and that will prevent it from turning as the saw blade cuts it.

And, yeah, NutSplitter sounds like what someone would do on a fence when trying to climb over and slipping.

But, they do work cool. About 90% of the time or more, the bolt is not even marked and can be reused if it was just rounded off nut.

Of course, if the bolt it too rusted to take the nut off, it usually does not matter.

I like the nut splitter...I may go get one of those and prevent any damage to my outer bumper....if I can keep from laughing when I walk up to he counter and ask for a nut splitter and some lube....
need some shop towels with that?

dude, use a die grinder with a cutting wheel to cut 3 lines in the head of the carriage bolt, then smack the middle with a large punch and hammer...

Hack saw~ 5 min

Die grinder~ 2 min

5" grinder w/ cutoff wheel ~ 30 sec

Oxy-fuel cutting torch~ 3 sec

Just because the bolt your trying to back off is about a foot from your fuel tank doesn't mean that your driveway will become the next Hiroshima when you whip out that grinder. I've had 6 of those f***ing carriage bolts lock up with rust on the front and rear bumpers, I ended up torching all the heads off and pounding them out, no damage to the bumper, and no discoloration in the chrome. If you can get that bolt to stick out past the bumper use a torch or a grinder (however if you have a serious fuel leak I would advise fixing that first before using an open flame or flinging some sparks) just make sure you got steady hands

I can't believe how many people are misinformed. Liquid fuel WILL NOT "blow up". I will throw a lit match into a 5 gallon bucket of fuel any day (i've done it before to prove my point). It is contained gas vapor that will blow up.

In my Pyromaniac days i used to use the Fuel for my little Rc car which was supposedly 20% nitrous or some shet like that i dont remember. But i would put it in a empty pellet container and burn it on. To my suprise it was not explosive at all except for when i started the flame and the vapors over it ignited but even that wasnt more than my natural gas stove makes when it starts up. My biggest issue was sticking around long enough for it all to burn out . 9/10 times i ended up putting it out early out of boredom.

If your that worried about the gas tank catching fire.... Do you have a gas leak? SHould be ok if not, and just throw a wet towel on the fuel tank area and cram it in all the spaces sparks could fly and then cut the SOB out with a grinder.

for the record. I cut an access panel in the floor of my burb to change the sending unit today. what makes you think sparks are going to be thrown through the bumper?

I'd use a center punch ,make a mark in the center of the bolt head ,then drill it with a 1/4" bit,then go up to a 1/2"..after you get thru the head and into the shank,a few taps with the center punch will push it thru the back side,no sparks,no flames,no worries about fire or explosions...

Only thing I have had "split" when using a nut splitter,is the splitter itself!..

..only a few times have I used one of those things and had any success--usually you cant even fit the dam thing in where you need to put it!...

I hear ya...I will try the less invasive approach first...I bought a nut spliter...if that doesn't work I will use the drill...if that doesn't work I will use a cutting wheel...
I'm not so much concerned about the gas tank as I am not ruining my bumper...but gasoline is always something to consider...

That sounds like a good plan. If you use the cutting wheel hopefully you could get one on the inside so if you hit the bumper it will not be noticable to anybody, you can always paint the inside of the bumper if its you that will notice it

Ahh, the Chuck Norris method of fastener removal... he just stares at the bolt, and the nut spins off in fear!

heat it up with mapp gas, put a 6-point box end wrench and pull, if that doesn't work, cheater bar.
