1974 K10 Dirty Sancho

Saved from cruel and unusual punishment
Sitting out in the driveway, still open header. Noticed the transmission pan sprung a leak so I need to deal wit that. Bought the correct tailgate hardware and bolted up the period correct tailgate.

I won’t be spending too much time on this one in the near future since I need to get a cage and seats in the K10 first.

I wish I knew I have a few sets of the tailgate hardware.
I threw away a few and kept 2 sets 3 weeks ago

It was a bit of a debacle trying to figure out what I needed. The truck had a 80’s removable tailgate on it so the hardware was quite different. Eventually figured out the 73-74 has specific hardware which was sourced for about $20 online.

I mentioned earlier that the transmission sprung a leak and after a quick inspection it appeared to be the pan leaking. Rather than trying to straighten the stock stamped pan I bought a replacement cast piece from summit which appears to have fixed the problem. With that fixed I loaded it up on the trailer and took it over to the exhaust shop so they can bend some pipe and burn in the old dynomax mufflers off the K10.

Nice! I love cast aluminum pans and valve covers. Work so much better.

spent a little time messing with the truck, ran some temporary wires to the electric choke and got the engine to temp. When it was open header it sounded like it had a cam in it, now with exhaust it sounds/feels like a miss. I've noticed the SS header tubes on 5 & 7 are still not discolored like the other cylinders tubes so I'm focusing on those two cylinders as the culprit. Plugs are darker in those holes as well. I've verified spark in both cylinders so I'm starting to wonder if I have a cam going flat or dead cylinders :doah:I probably need to pull the valve cover off for a visual inspection along with a compression test. I don't hear any valve train chatter so if it's a bad cam/lifters, someone adjusted the rocker arms. It's also coughing through the carb if I quickly pop the throttle pedal at idle which can also be a sign of a bad cam. Anything else I'm overlooking?

Confirm 5 and 7 wires aren't switched...

But uou knew that...

Maybe a leak down to be sure the head gasket isn't blown between 5 and 7.

Double and triple checked the firing order including those two cylinders. I was talking with @Bent77 and he mentioned the possibly of 5/7 leaking between the intake ports. Yesterday I noticed the idle mixture screws were not causing the engine to react like it should which is an indication of a vacuum leak and would support the 5/7 manifold leak.
