1977 Chevy K10 Trailering Special

I have a 1977 Chevy K10 trailering special, this is my first truck and has been a learning curve due to having no experience with vehicles. The truck was parked for 6 years behind a barn because of a bad fuel system. Last year I pulled it out and was going to fix the truck but did not have funds to properly replace the fuel system. This spring I finally decided to go all-in and fix the truck with the help of my brother.

I completely replaced the fuel system (except for the fuel selector valve) which made her come back to life. I put two new saddle tanks and made new tank straps and the felt padding due to the straps I bought was too big for the tanks. The sending units are new but they still give inaccurate measurements even with a good ground. I replaced all the rubber fuel lines except the metal ones because they were still in good shape. The fuel pump was replaced and was relatively easy to install with a tip from my brother. My brother also rebuilt the carburetor which is an Edelbrock 400 and made a huge difference in performance.

I’m in the process of finishing the last details to complete the swap. The engine that is going in is a rebuilt ZZ1 crate engine. This motor is going to be a significant upgrade from the one that was in it with 335hp. The old was having problems burning oil and had tons of miles.

The installation process is going smoothly with the help of my brother who rebuilt the engine for me. Overall, this has been a fun learning experience and I cannot wait to do more modifications to my truck in the future.

So, I'm the brother helping out. We have gotten it started and running, however, we have a lot of tuning to do. The Edelbrock just isn't equipped to run this engine out of the box. We also have some valvetrain clatter I'm trying to work out. I believe it is a noisy lifter (they are used). I have some weld-on bungs ordered and have access to an AFR meter so we can get the carb tuned to perfection. We managed to lay down a decent one wheel peel so I'm thinking a new rear carrier will be in order eventually. Come to think of it, I have an extra 12 bolt Eaton Posi I might donate to the project.

I’ll be following along, I grew up in my dads 78 K20. Same exact two tone paint as that one so tons of good memories were brought back by seeing yours.

Hows that ZZ1 doing? Did you get the valve train figured out. I this a flat tappet cam or a roller?

My 77 Burb is the same 2 tone as well. Does yours have the paint codes on the rpo sticker ?

The project has been on the back burner for the past year because of school and parts failure. The main failure was the ZZ1 engine because it had a bunch of metal in the oil pan after the break-in oil change. The engine never ran good and my brother could never tune it right “surprisingly”. Then the truck sat in the yard for about a year until we bought a new crate 350 with a warranty and started the process again.

Then I got the new engine installed paired with new long tube headers and a dual exhaust system. The next big improvement we made was putting a new engine and headlight harness. This was a awesome improvement due to the old one hanging on by a thread and being scorched by the new exhaust headers. I also got new 3/8” battery cables which also made a huge difference in the way the tuck started.056A2629-EFF0-4BA5-8E7C-FE3CA5127A50.jpeg

The starter was experiencing heat soak due to the long tube headers so I added a starter heat shield which helped but the problem still happened after an 10 min drive when I tried to restart it. Then I added heat wrap and this has fixed the problem and starts right up. This was my first time installing heat wrap didn’t do the best job but it seems to be holding up just fine. I picked up some spark plugs boot shields for additional heat protection.
