1977 k5 498 bbc…poom

Glad to hear its working. You running in low range or high range, the 208 has a lower low, so it may make it feel more powerful in low. But with the big block you may be running in high anyway for wheel speed, depends on the track length and wheel speed needed.

How is the big block build coming along?

The engine build is going well! Heads, pushrods, intake, oil pump and pan are on. I am currently working on my fuel system parts and pulley systems parts as well. Only thing holding me back is money lol. I have purchased some 2 piece racing wheels and paddles from a buddy. I will post pics soon.

Unreal how fast time flies! I had to move my motor to another shop due to some drama no worth mentioning. Anyways, this new shop is great. The TH350 motor is out and the truck is kinda just chillin' at the moment. I bought some Harland Sharp 1.7 Roller tip rockers and slapped em on the AFR heads. Looks like they are too chunky for this set-up as the rear of #8 specifically looks like it'll be rubbing the lip of the head at the valve cover. A few other rockers are very close too hitting as well. So, I am now waiting on Summit Racing to send me the Diamond series variant. They are a bit narrower and a few OZ lighter as well. That's officially all I am waiting on parts wise. The pulleys and brackets have been delivered and are sexy as hell. I got "The Beast" 8 rib set up from CVF racing. Nice pieces I must say. The more I think of it the more I wanna put this engine in a Nova or Chevelle! However, it will be nice to be different and smoke almost anything in my K5 lol.

I like Harland Sharps, they make good rockers.

I have thought the same thing before, my truck engine in my car that weighs 2000 lbs less would be a lot quicker! But its still fun, just a different fun! You will like it.

8 months since I last posted. PHEW! My wife and I just had our first baby boy last month soooooo been busy lol

Where do I begin...

So motor is officially built. Was blue printed and documented very professionally by a local shop named ******** Performance. They work on all kinds of different vehicles...matter of fact they are installing a whipple and custom exhaust on a Ford GT40 at the moment!

Anyway, They are about to begin working on the following:
  • Finish building the 1 tons: 4.56 G2 gears, king pin rebuild, sand blast/POR15 housing, new bearings, Detroit locker/Detroit true trac, disc brake conversion and perches/mounts relocated. I'll be running 16.5x10" rims with TSL Super Swampers 35X15.5"
  • Install ORD rear traction bar kit
  • Finish fuel system...-8AN lines with HP150 pump and -6AN return lines using a 16 Gal JAZZ fuel cell. I did the tank swap and made a custom backet for fuel pump myself
  • Install BBC with ORD motor mounts and ORD Engine xmember
  • Install MSD Digital Programmable ignition with MSD blaster II coil
  • Install hydro boost set up. My BBC will not be making enough vacuum and I just feel more comfortable using the hydro set up. I do not have the El Dorado calipers so a parking brake alternative option is needed...line lock?
  • Fire up engine break in and dyno...not much break in is needed as it is a solid roller set up ;)
In the Fall hopefully I will have the funds to have a full cage built and some custom tubular bumpers fabbed up. I also have a lot of rust on the 1/4 panels. Thinking about grinding that off and slapping on some bushwacker flares...maybe.

So that's where I am at at the moment. Looking so forward to seeing what she will do.

P.S. This site is amazing and I have learned a plethora so far lol

Update:

Whelp, the shop basically fired the motor up back in November. Revved it, ooohhhed and awwed at the sound and could'nt get it to shift into 3rd. I advised them it's got a reverse manual valve bodied TH400 and told them it won't shift automatically!!! The next few days the engine builder went over to adjust the valve train. The result was water leaking from the exhaust and a cracked block. Apparently, water somehow leaked into one or two cylinders from the head and well the motor didn't like it. The shop insists it was caused by a sleeved cylinder as the engine was worked over once before. That's fine and dandy, however; the machine shop I took it to reassured me that a sleeved cylinder is common and not to worry. I figured it would be added security at least for one cylinder as it's already at .060. Anyway, the engine builder and machine shop have hashed it out and bored me out another block. It's in the process of rebuild and hopefully I wont get raped to hard on the price. This build is ummmm, yeah....

Sucky.

Hows the kid?

UPDATE

The shop has finally built the 2nd motor. I had a good friend take a look at it before I paid them for the build (I no longer live in El Paso). There was an extreme vibration at around 1800 RPM's. The shop said, "it's a stroked BBC with solid motor mounts and a HUGE cam...it's gonna shake." Yeeeaaahhhh this was not a "normal" shake at all according to my 20 years of engine building experienced buddy. The machine shop owner was called to take a peek at it. He immediately saw that the flywheel was not the same one he used when it was originally balanced a few years ago...oh my. Yup, so they need to take the fly wheel off and send it back to the machine shop to have him match the weight (with the original flywheel) so it'll harmonize correctly. Apparently the original flywheel did not have the right bolt pattern when they went to connect the converter and tranny. It's an honest mistake I guess...more of an annoyance than anything at this point. Next build I pull the trigger on will be done in my driveway. I can use youtube and you guys to point me in the right direction! My wife and I are closing on a new home here in Huntsville, Al in a few weeks, so the closing cost is inhibiting the forward momentum of this build lol. Next month I will hopefully be testing this pig at busted knuckles 4x4 park...fingers crossed

its so hard to find a GOOD QUALITY machine shop these days for engine work . . . .

so many bad story's from local to corporate level .

if your going to play you might as well do it your self then the only one to blame is YOU !

i am oing to be doing my 454 up with new roller conversion cam and all roller parts here soon . i have a box with close to if not over 2k in parts for it . it was a good running 60k mile 454 with a flat cam . so i know it ran good just needed a cam . i will also be building a engine run stand here soon also . . . going to fire the motor and run it out of the vehicle first ! ! ! ........ plus i have another i need to get running and my friend is going to be building a .030-.040 over 327 sbc for his vette over the winter and wants to fire it also . so she will get used for sure and save a lot of bullsh!t

Preach! I 100% agree. It is more satisfying to do it yourself. Im now thinking of using this motor in a 90's fox body with a 200 shot and run 9's lol. Later i will slap a 5.3 vortec in the k5 and cruise.
