1978 K20 farm truck "Boring maintenance phase"

1978 K20- Rusty beater farm truck
I'm sure he meant the adapter needed work for the shift rail and retainer.

This^ and the idler shaft nut needs some clearance. AA sells a 2" spacer that would've made life easier except then both driveshafts would be wrong

Today's progress, not quite as far as I wanted but not too bad considering it's around 95 and humid out.

Started off the morning by installing the new lockouts, because squirrel.

After driving to Oskaloosa and picking up my heads from the machine shop I returned and got the short input swapped into the 205

Strapped onto the jack, ended up mounting the bell first then stabbing the trans.

I'm really liking the shifter location. Never mind the horrendous floor cuts those are PO goodness. I had to cut the booger welds off to get the tunnel out

Tomorrow's project is to get the 205 mounted, driveshafts in, and take it for a quick spin to see how it works.

The shifter placement is nice. What application is that knob from?

@campfire heres what has to be done to bolt a 205 directly to an NV4500 with no spacer.

You have to clearance the inside of the tailhousing of the trans to clear the front seal retainer bolts. As well as file down the face of the retainer around the edge to allow it to seat fully.

Clearance has to be made for for the shift rail as well.

The corner of the tailhousing also has to be rounded out to clear the 205's idler shaft nut. None of this really hard just time consuming to make sure everything will clear before installing it

It does run and drive again, sorry no pictures during the progress. It's about like working on the surface of the sun today so I just kept my head down and kept moving. No 4x4 yet sadly. I did all the modifications to the trans and t-case to avoid having to modify driveshafts. Which failed horribly  the rear shaft is maxed out length wise to reach and the front is about 1.5-2" too long. So it looks like I'll be ordering the AA 1 5/8" spacer for the face of the 205 anyways :doah:

But having overdrive was amazing. So much quieter in the cab even with a gaping hole in the floor around the transmission

What was your overall tranny/adapter/bell length before and after the swap?

I don't remember now, I didn't bother taking a tape measure to anything. Oh well the spacer is cheaper than modifying both driveshafts. THen I can sell off the brand new short 32 spline input that I'll have like 100 miles on.

Measure twice, cut once. :pimp:

I'm gonna guess about 1-5/8" difference lol

Sadly you're pretty much spot on. 1 5/8" is EXACTLY what the rear shaft needs for me to be happy with it. Oh well live and learn. The short input will likely end up on the classifieds here when I get it back out

No it's more fun to suffer in the sun and heat for 8 hours only to have to do it all over again. This truck has a habit of making me look like a fool on occasion. Why should this be any different :haha:

Yesterday was a busy day but a good one. As stated sorry no pics were taken but this one at the start of the day, had to modify the gasket a bit.

This was my first temporary trans tunnel, It didn't help one bit that truck was a miserable hot box.

Despite the impressive heat and noise I couldn't help but take it to my grandmothers place. Ignore the speedometer, I need to figure out how to get it corrected. Actual speed was around 58-60

This evenings project was to temporarily hack the old trans tunnel so it would work and make the truck more enjoyable. I left out the closeup of my work, the welds were of very high quality though

Then it was time to cruise the neighborhood, the other three were mad to be left at home but since Sally is like my child she got to come along. Needless to say she approved.

Overall I'm extremely happy with the truck now. I really liked driving it before but I love driving it now. With the 3.73's and the NV4500 it cruises very well and hopefully will result in a bit better and more tolerable mileage. Not that I care about mileage one bit (@campfire ) but it sure helps with its current tiny fuel tank. Today I ordered the AA spacer to put in and allow me to run both of my current driveshafts and actually have a 4x4 again.
