1978, too much rust? salvagable? NEW PICS

This is too much rust! There was a lot in the areas you can see in the pics as well as a lot in ares not seen. An area I never expected rust was around the windshield, but that area was GONE!

cant see those pictures, not a member member yet. Still debating on the fee to have full access. Ive never paid for forum access before. I was just checking out the review of rust bullet on here though. That guys truck has some horrible cancer.

What do you guys think of rust bullet?

Ha, I would call the K5 in the original post "mint". The carpet is holding my floor pan together.

the first picture of the area in front of the back fender wells were the drop off is. Mine is pretty much completely gone were those three bolts are....it looks like yours isnt that bad especially for its age. Mines a 85 and worst off then yours!

thats good to know still. I wish i knew how to weld but i don't.

What would be a good welder that would get the job done and wouldn't break the bank?

it def looks worse than the other pics, but anything is salvagable.the correct sheetmetal is pretty cheap to replace those areas.or you can go cheaper and just use strait sheetmetal and cut to fit.most replacement panels require a lil work to get them to fit right anyway.i have a sears mig welder i got for 200 bucks.it works great for welding in sheetmetal.and the price was right.i think harbor freight has one similar to mine right now for 200 on sale.i use the non gas shielded version.its just easier not to have to worry about hooking up the gas to the welder and getting it perfect that way.the welds arent as clean, but work well for what i need to do.

Paying for a membership here is well worth it man. You will not find the knowledge and help that is offered here anywhere else on the Web. Pirate has a wealth of knowledge but its also well known as being a not so friendly place for people starting out in building/restoring thier trucks.

Here however, people dont care if you just learned what a wrench is. They will help you out every step of the way and never give you **** about asking what they think is a begginer question. Everybody has to start somewhere and everyone around here understands that.

Rust Bullet...I used it on my frame, truck is still being built so i cant really give a good assessment on how well it holds up. There is a member on here RYOKEN who will be able to give you the best advice on treating metal for rust.

Man. I'm so happy I found my blazer in West TX. The only rust on my whole truck is under the battery at the inner fender lip, which I'll be replacing soon anyway.

I had the whole interior pulled out, and luckily, the only repairs I had were the all too common floor pan cracks around the seat bolts and cracks around the driver's side striker bolt.

While you're pulling stuff up and having a better look, remove the carpet kick panels where the front seat belts bolt to. That sidewall area is likely gone or near to it judging by the rest of the pics...

Rene

I pulled those but didnt take pictures, there is some rust and holes. Its weird how the floors are the only really bad spots. . .

Also I live at an apartment that doesnt really allow working on trucks/cars.

"DUMB IDEA APPROACHING"

How stupid would it be for me replace the panel that the bed bolts to up front and those seat belt areas with wood after cutting off the rust and then seal it up and use rust bullet? since i cant exactly get a welder out in the parking lot(plus they cost a fair amount). I could then buy a new bed and then seal and re-bolt it to the wood.. . . . . . just a thought . . .unless someone in north Georgia could help me out? id pay you in $ and food/beer lol I cant stand this rust lingering.

Wood for any part of a car/truck is just a bad idea...

Paying someone to fix what you have is gonna cost. you're looking at a lot of hours and it's not 'fun' work at all. That tailpan area itself (under the tailgate) requires removing the last 3 sets of body mounts and lifting the rear half of the body up 3-4" to get the new tailpan in. You could spend between 40 and 60 hours to make any significant progress on your rust...

Rene

whats the best way to tackle this then? i mean is she scrap? I really just want to cut out rusty areas and only buy repro parts where they are absolutely needed like the tailgate and then i could use sheet metal or something to repair the other sections.
