Ok. So this kind of puts us back on track. So I am riding in the Mts. Camping. Hunting. Hiking. Exploring. Yada, yada, yada. Seeing some old k5's around and of course some short-box Chevys. This starts me wanting to get the old girl back to her former glory. Notice my 2011 register date. I started lurking.
Well I started building the canyon in late 2012. Had to wait til after we got hitched in fall of 2012.
As I was building the canyon the squarebody sickness was hitting me HARD. Why the hell was I building this thing, it will never be a square! Oh well. It's still cool right? Idk.
Then I said screw it. I am heading to IL to get my truck going.
So I pulled it out of the shed.
So the plan was a mild build. Which it will still be. I don't need to wheel super hard anymore. I don't like breaking crap, I want a nice relaxing time. And breaking stuff gets me in a huff.
Throw in an engine.. Guess what kind...SBC 400
Fix trans.
Throw down 3/4 ton axles from old truck purchase years ago.
New tires, new wheels.
Drive to colorado, pull buddies heap around the mts.
Did something I did not think I could do. Pulled this pos out the top. The old bug catcher hole made a little place for the cherry picker to go into. Who knew?
So as me and my buddy are working, drinking, and catching up. He asks me what the plan is. I tell him about the good SBC400 sitting in the shed I got from a co worker. That's suppose to be a runner. (I never checked it out)
And he says "well why cheap out on "big red"now?"
God I hate that name! But he was right. Why half ass the engine now. It needs to be proper.
500HP proper.
So I decided I would rebuild the 400 with the dead cylinder from the Monte Carlo SS. It needed to be rebuilt anyways right? So I got it on an engine stand.
So at that time I dumped the trans off at the guy who rebuilt it the first time back in 1999. I put the 3/4 ton axles in and dumped the 400 of at my machine shop. Life is good. Getting the stepper back in top notch shape. Be on the road in no time. Plan is that I would hit the truck hard with rebuilt stuff during Xmas 2013 and would ship it out springish of 2014.
Then during the fall of 2013 I called a friend to catch up and he dropped a bomb on me. He had a Dana 60 for 200$ Friend special...but who cares!
So the plan changes a bit some. Looks like if I am going to dump a 60 up front. I guess I better do a few other things. Some things I want and some I need. I was going to mostly work on the things that were needed. Then I found these at the yard. Decent from a 91' sub. They will get recovered later.
This when I took this pic. Same guy who did the frame in 1999. He's a little bit of shirttail relation to us. He asked me what they were for and I said " remember that old truck I was wor-""yeah I remember" " you still playing with that thing?"
"Yeah I sure am"
