Does anyone have one of these Big Ten package trucks? My dad has one that is a 80 model and I was just trying to find some information on them, specifically the towing capacity. Its my understanding that they have a heavy duty suspension in a half ton truck, kinda like the newer model 1500HD's I guess. Any information anyone has on these trucks would be appreciated. Thanks!

my dad bought a big 10 new in 1980 and from my understanding it is actually a 5/8 ths ton rather than a half ton. the big 10 package only consist of heaver rear springs and wide mag wheels. Our big 10 can tow quite a bit, we had a slide in topper type camper shell and it carried without any effort at all. I heard GM did it to avoid the light truck emmissions or something to that nature.:D

would surprise me much if thats what GM did. But hey you cant complain about a 1/2 ton thats accualy more like 5/8 ton. lol

I just try to share the information!

LOL. Yeah, I don't even post the link up much any more, 'cuz other folks do it for me :D

So, to the point ... anybody notice that the (Olds350 aka 5.7L) diesel was rated for a whopping 2000# towing, when an otherwise similarly equipped gas truck was 7000#? Jeez, those things were set up to fail!

And to the OP, check out the last page of the Pickup brochure for 1980, to wit:

Looks like you net 700-1000# GVWR above regular C-10's with the Big-10 package. It has bigger front springs, by the looks unique to that package, and then the optional heavy duty spring pack in the rear.

A 3/4-ton it's not, but they're kinda fun.

Ya junk, i looked at a truck a while back it had one, you shut if the engine the whole damned truck shook. lol

in the words of my uncle when asked about the 5.7, "dont walk away from it run away" lol

We were planning on pulling a 27 foot camper with ours which weighs about 6000# loaded. I think we will be ok. Thanks to everyone who replied and sent pics and links. I really appreciate everyone's help.

big ten package is the only time ive seen a half ton shortbed come factory with a th400.

i would like a good stright shot pic or 2 or 3 of the big 10 decal on the back quarters of the box. then some basic length width hight of the sticker and letter gaps. i want to do a custom sticker and make it look 99% orignal just like the big 10 sticker.

if you would and could post it up that would be so helpfull thanks.

If I remember to, I can get a good pic of one that's near my work. Only problem is, it's not the best neighborhood and I don't know the owner. Shouldn't be a problem though:D
