Man Point Sunday

So I got invited to a MPS by speed hole Mike and took advantage of this to bang some work out on the mall crawler.

Started the day with the truck looking like this.:doah:

Later the neighbor came over and needed the cherry picker to pull his challange cup car, he thinks he broke the cam last night.

Next I started back on the mall crawler, not my greatest moment but I dropped the truck on the ground, negative man points! I was lowering the drivers side to adjust the coil over and never dawned on me the truck wasn't held up by a Jack stand. Stuff came crashing down and I chipped the concrete and had to empty my shorts. I have lifted probably 10,000 vehicles in the passed 7 years. Nothing was broke, or bent.

Next I tried out the rear leaf springs, come to find out I have 56's :haha: here is the shackle angel with the springs at no weight on the spring.

Now Here it is with the spring flat.

Not sure at this point it had 7 inches of travel and with droop I'm going to say 10 inches. Now do I run these, grab some f150 springs like Adam or do Ord springs?

Next for giggles I wanted to look at the cross bar clearance for the intake, granted the trans isn't in yet.

Not bad but it's going to need some work.

For man points Sunday I came in at a respectable third place!

No I freaked out and didn't snap a pic, that is with a Jack stand on the frame at ride height.:thumb:

It is very nice all I have to do is droop the axle down and turn the keeper to adjust ride height. While the frame is at ride height.:pimp:
 
If you want new springs, get the ford 57's. Otherwise just run what you have. Swapping leaf springs out isn't that big of a deal.
 
Thst is what I have been thinking. I have 3 options in my head. Use th se 56's and get 10 inches, get th f159 springs and get 12 or order up some Ord springs. I want a spring that will compliment the front 14 inches of travel.
 
I think you should install the rear axle with the tires, wheels and shocks you want to use and cycle the suspension. Your current springs may work just fine. Or better yet, go for a test drive and see how they'll work in real life. You'd be surprised how much travel you can get from stock rear springs with long enough shocks, especially if you take out a leaf if they're too stiff. Unless you're wanting to mount some 18" travel shocks straight up and down with holes cut in the wheel wells and the bedside flared. That's a different story.
 
Run it like that first. Your not going to be racing baja from day one. It will be fine for first runs. Shake out the bugs in the front half of the truck first. Then work on more rear travel.


Yah and you don't have to use all the travel the shocks have in the rear. So if you haven't bought shocks yet buy them for whatever travel you ultimately want. Just know packaging 14" shocks in the rear without cutting the bed is highly unlikely.
 
I understand but I hate doing work multiple times.

I think once I get the axle in and droop it down I will make my mind up. Is it such a bad thing to have more travel on one side then the other?
 
Yes but I'm affraid with 14 inches of travel in the front and 10 in the rear it will act goofy?

You can check his build thread, but I remember he cautioned me about having too much front travel without as much out back. He described the effect as a "pogo stick" over bumps. The front soaks up the hit, but the rear doesn't have enough travel to do the same thing and ends up just bottoming-out and then kicks the whole back end up into the sky.

Didn't sound like a fun time to me. :eek1:

Every desert truck I've ever seen has substantially more travel out back than up front.... and when you watch them run at speed over the bumps you can really see how much more work the rear suspension is doing.

Personally, I'd probably just do something to "dumb down" that 14" of travel up front (closer to 10" if that's all you're going to have out back)... and run it like that until you get a long-travel rear suspension figured out.

Thanks Greg that is exactly what I figured would happen. With the rear being light to I bet it does it anyway.
 
The pogo stick bent frame comes from it running out of travel. Id run it like wade said just have good (stock) shocks when you take it out. I have had really good luck with the 2500hd bilsteins on my k5 with 4 inch blocks. They have a decent amount of damping both ways and don't pack up in the whoops. they heat up quick though. But they work good enough to test it.
Here is my 2c I have been thinking the opposite direction as you, I am worried that with only 14 in the front of mine the rear, which is easy to get 16 or more will be a waste. I am working with a veteran desert builder and he told me as long as your not way off one side it will be fine. Like 16 front and 30 rear.. I'm not sure there is a ratio that is a silver bullet but as long as the rear is actually working and not running some old twin tube rancho 5k,Im sure for testing you'll be fine.

Atlas and deaver both make bolt in spring packs that will cycle 16 inches with zero mods, because you flipped the shackle that might change things, ORD are Alcan but same idea with all the mfg with the long travel springs.

I agree, I'm not affraid to go back to a tension shackle if it makes the results I want. This weekend the rear axle should be going in and I will shoot Stephen some measurements at ORD to see what needs to be done.
