Never thought about it, curious to see if anyone else has used that setup.

I kind of like the idea I mentioned above, but will the 2 90's really take away that much?
 
Why not a k&n with a small Tube off the front to push a ay from the engine a little bit. The two 90s on that look pretty smooth. Could take it out to the core support same as that one. You could get a stock newer trucks intake off the fender like was said too. It will Have baffles inside to Keep water out if you ever do Water Crossings or mud. To an extent. But at that point going deep Water you'd want a actual snorkel.

But this is the mall crawler build. Will it ever see water crossings at all?
 
I've seen a mall parking lot flash flood pretty bad before. I mean there were shopping carts literally floating across the parking lot on their sides. No one would attempt to drive across the water. I can see where the Overbuilt Mall Crawler would be able to succeed in conditions like that.
 
Like chuli said get an intake off a dmax or something, you'll gain a lot of benefits. Open elements are not "cold" air especially in the engine bay.. Plus the less bends the better.. two 90s is a bit much imho, especially if you really don't need them.
 
Spectre, king of the riceboy crap, makes a plenum that fits right on top of a carb or TBI. There's some pix and whatnot in my build thread.

It's not keyed, so you can clock it in any direction. You can then use their inline filter and go straight to wherever you want, front, side, whatever. Mine's to the side but you could just as easily run it to the radiator support.

Hmm, is it really that bad to have 90's though? Would it not be able to suck in enough and choke it?

Problem is it has to make such a sharp curve at the throttle body cause of the fan.
 
Ben, all factory LS engines (besides some Vettes that suck from over the rad) all have a 90 degree bend in their intake tubes.

Yes of course but those are high dollar. I could piece it together for cheaper and be better.

I'm just curious if two 90's would be that restricting to cause harm. I'll need one at the throttle body regardless but the extra one depending on the setup won't be used. Fresh air would be best which is why I like the setup through the grill
 
I can assure you that the two 90s will make no noticeable difference in performance. You will probably lose about 3hp.
 
2 90s are not need to come frome the core support. Line from thecore support into a filter box. Then to the intake 90. The box and filter are the second 90. Just make them big enough to not restrict air flow.

I had a guy in California who claimed his truck, 6.0L, was substantially faster with no filter. So I bet him $200 that he could not get 3% more hp on a dyno. I do not remeber the actual hp numbers, but we ran it at K&N in Corona. No air cleaner compared to a K&N cold air system. Reduction of less than 2%. Dinner was tasty that night.
 
Hmm not picking it up right. Wade, are you talking about the pieces I have linked above? Wouldn't with your idea need some flex hose?
 
I thought you wanted to do this on the cheap. Go to a wrecking yard and pick up the box as shown in glenns truck. Move it to where it lines up with the intake hole on the core support. Attach to said core support. Then you only have one bend in the flow. Kind of the same thing as the 55 chevy, just not as pricey and it runs an off the shelf filter.
