The pointiness of the weld usually indicates that the gun angle is too large. Get the gun more vertical and the welds will get more round. Also, the overlap on those beads are too far apart which means your travel speed is too fast. Slow it down and work the puddle a little longer before moving forward.

...then you will probably get a trophy. :)

My old man once told me that you stitch back and forth at about the speed of a waltz. But I don't listen to that :poo:

So if you can split time in your mind and still weld, I listen to metal while I weld. Nothing more appropriate while melting metal
 
I rarely get what I feel is a "pretty" weld but I've cut and ground enough of them apart (due to fabrication error :doah: ) to know they are plenty functional.
 
I'll take some close up pictures of how it all fits, it literally is maybe the width of my fingers from the oil pan and less then that for the axle tube to the frane.
 
Put the air bump in straight up and down not angled forward like that. In theory the relationship between the bump and the steering shaft can't move so 3/16" is great. You need to clearance grind something on that shock mount, the shock eye looks all sorts of scared up on the side. That kind of contact will break shock shafts or eyes.

We set the clearance from the front axle to harmonic balancer on my buggy at 1/4" in bump. Anything fails more than that and I loose the engine. knocking on wood it's been like that for like 14 years now.
 
Thanks for the tips, I kind of just set the can in like that. To use the jeep steering shaft I had to drill new holes in the link bracket, I will grind away to clearance it.

I think I'm about half inch between the balancer and the panhard. I had longer motor mounts made to put the engine up higher so it wouldn't contact the pan.

To give perspective I'm using a Ord small block cross member, most ls swaps use the big block cross member and even then it's hit our miss on configuration of mounts.
 
Needed stuff for the trans cooler, needed the 15 dollar -8 90 to put the trans cooler line below the radiator support.
