1. Do you even want to row gears? Do you even have the mechanical ability to swap transmissions like that and get it done right? (not everyone can)

2. $2450 does sound high but not far off. Call around and get more quotes. $2K sounds about right.

3. 700R4 can go behind any LS engine, I have an LQ4 6.0L with my built 700. But, I do plan to eventually go 4L65E because the shift points are a lot better and the 65E's are still tougher than a 700, even though they are pretty similar.

I need some advice, I have owned my 1983 diesel blazer for a year now. It has a 700r4 transmission. The transmission is done and needs either a rebuild or replacement. Should I rebuild it, replace it, or as some have done convert it to a manual nv4500? (It would be pretty BA to have a manual) Where should I buy the replacement/rebuild kit? Should I get a tranny from monster transmissions or just go to my local auto parts store? Also should I do it myself or pay someone? I have never done a transmission before but I do have the know how to figure it out. My thing is, is it worth my time and effort for the savings in doing it myself? My mechanic quoted me $2450. A new transmission and tourque converter runs about $1400 from what I have seen. Any advice would be great. My main goal is to make it reliable out on the trail and as a daily driver. Thanks.

My best advice is to find a guy that builds autos for a living and does side work or has his own side business doing transmissions and get as many references as you can to make sure he does good quality work. Trans rebuild shops wayyyy overcharge for what it actually takes and most of them I've dealt with do shitty quality work that's not worth paying for. It's not rocket science but you don't want to mess anything up since there's a lot to have to tear back down for one little screw up.
