1983 shortbed/ stepside build thread

This is horrible news! Now I will have to put mine together.

I still have some work to do before I can post pictures, its a mess under the hood. Hoses and lines everywhere. I gotta clean it up a bit and route the hoses and mount them so they look and will function flawlessly. Right now its just put together just incase it didn't work out for me that I wouldn't have a ton to do. I will post pics for you asap:waytogo:

Well, how does it run? Anything to add? Mine runs horrible with an empty bottle.

You mean doesn't run with an empty bottle...lol. It runs great, pretty snappy and revs pretty high. Hard starting tho, I bought a electric primer for the model e, push the button cranks and varoom..lol. So far well worth it, I'm currently changing the timing curve finding more. I'll prob have 18 degrees initial and 12 Advance all in by 3k. I noticed any more than 32 degrees under load it pings. I'll be able to tell u more in 2 weeks at the last mud bog of the year, it will get beat on hard. I just hope the 40 inch boggers don't tear up my 60 too bad.

I drove it like 20 miles with just vapor in the tank and above 2500 it would pop and bang. I know from reading the books hard starts are small vac leaks. When mine does it I go snugg up all the carb bolts. Mine is maybe 34 with 20 int.

In think hard starting is my motors 12.5:1 and has a real low vac signal with the can I have. With the tall airgap intake, the adapter and low vac it doesn't help. If messing with the advance curve doesn't work it prob will get locked out. Going to be patient and see what happens. I'd like to get it adjusted perfect so its ready for the turbo 400 swap.

My 427 in my camaro is locked out and it idled way better. Mine k30 454 very low compression (8 or less) so initial will help tq. I guess I will finish collecting parts for the tunnel ram swap over fall break.

I was thinking about buying a tunnel ram instead of the adapter. Then I can use the progressive linkage setup.

The build I found said progressive doesn't work well. I do think the long runners would really help tq.

Also the 1.45 a gallon I paid for it on Saturday make me think my k10s 383 needs a sniffer.

Look how much tq a tpi adds to a normal 350. Think of a tunnel ram as a LPG version.

1.45 a gallon....wtf..lol...I just paid 2.25, I got 20 gallon to mess with it. I only did all this because race gas was cheap when I did the motor, if I would of known better I'd of done a big pump gas big block.

2.25 is cheap. All the big HP guys here use e85 and it is still 2.60. My lpg dealer did say that they may be one of the cheapest in the nation. I still like my LPG for crawling and general operation. Harder to kill and with 5.38s it should idle up most stuff. I am working toward only a BBC or diesel fleet.

I can tell you that running propane has saved me alot of money. For instance just one weekend alone i would use 20 gallon of vp 105, at 10.00 a gallon. Now i go thru about the same but at 2.25 a gallon. The dual carbs give it the pepper it has lost. It runs pretty good and real snappy, i just added an impco sv. Which is a start assist valve, that goes in the secondary chamber of the model and a vacuum hose to the baseplate for the extra help. A momentary switch on the dash and a spray or two and its fired. I have a low fuel light to hook up now too in the fuel line so i know when to turn the 2nd tank on. I have noticed i need the idle on the rich side also, if i lean idle out it has a dead spot off of idle and is harder to start. I did the sm465 shifter fix too by welding the ball all up and making it solid, this is temporary until i get to install the th400 i just had done.

Why are you getting rid of the manual? That seems backwards to me. :screwy:

Why don't you guys run truck tanks Instead of those fork lift bottles? I have a 80 gallon

We stopped wheeling and started mudding, there are about five places that hold mud boggs here that are timed and two for fun. Its too hard to speed shift the sm465, its like driving a dump truck thru a mud hole...lol. I had done a reverse manual valve body th400 with a 1800 stall. Hopefully im going in the right direction, also bought gears to regear to 513s. I think a little more gear with the 40 inch boggers will help. Im going to miss the manual trans tho, im still second guessing the swap. The poor trucks taking a beating going to all these mud events. I was almost going to look for another one to thrash.
