1985 Chevy M1009 (CK5 build thread part 2)

Those look good! There certainly is an abundance of selection out there, Amazon has a bunch of Chinesium versions which make me nervous.
Yeah I didn't realize there were so many options. I've always bought them from my local Napa which sells the good McGuard ones I think. I am not a fan of Amazon for most any auto parts unless it's just a store front for a legit place that sells good products.

I may be both silly & crazy, but I think the old M1009 turned out pretty good! The new stance is legit.
White letters out for sure. These new rims took way less weight than the steelies. and run down the high way a lot better. I even wire wheeled the wheel mounting surface on the hubs to get them nice and prepped, and repainted the rest of the hubs, because why not.

I ended up buying new lug nuts off of Amazon, a 32 pack of highly rated black 3/4" hex. They are are heavy and feel like quality so far.

I have probably 5 sets of those name you can’t pronounce lugnuts from Amazon and eBay both and none have given me any issue. Stance looks good, I’m still not sold on those white letters :D

I was randomly on eBay today looking for parts, and found these NOS hardtop antenna wire grommets:
Needless to say I ordered a pair, as mine are cracked out and leak. I tried a skim with some clear silicone, but it looks terrible.
This is one of those parts you will never see again...

Installed the NOS grommets, you can see I hit the area with some acetone to clean it up and it melted away the outer layer of paint. No biggie.

I also replaced the door striker bolts. The original one's were quite worn out:

On the drivers side, the captured nut started spinning in the cage, probably due to corrosion on the threads, so I oiled them up and worked it back and forth, using a screwdriver to wedge against the flat side of the nut and the hole in the body. I very carefully disassembled, and used a magnet to hold the nut just in case the cages' tack welds were broke. Dropping it down in the B-pillar would of been an absolute nightmare, as there is no access. But, alas, I was successful.

Up next is the get after replacing the pesky leaking rear main seal, I'm guessing its still the original rope seal, and I have the neoprene upgraded version to install. Honestly its not leaking that bad, but just enough to annoy me.
And, I now have passed two years of ownership of the M1009, and I still really dig it!

I have never seen that picture before. I think mine isn’t the few with the beacons on the roof. Otherwise, they could all be pictured. So cool.

The M1009 went to the Chrysler Mothership today!

@fastazz81 had offered up that I should come down to his work on a Saturday, to help me knock out the rear main seal. (thats his Chevelle in the background, getting exhaust/suspenison work done, too) I couldn't say no! Having the M1009 up on the lift made this job alot better. The hardest part was getting the rope seal out, it was extremely brittle and we had to extract it a little at a time using the Sneaky Pete tool as an auger, while we cranked the engine over by hand.
And, the inside of the engine looked really good. It was quite clean, and there is still actually paint visible on the ends of the rods. I also found out I have an orange torque converter. Must be high performance! :D

Prep for paint has begun!
I drove a bit last Sunday and yesterday to make sure the rear main seal and oil pan stayed sealed up, which they did. Awesome!
Today I decided to jump right in, disassembled a few exterior items, and started DAing the M1009. I went for 60 grit right away to knock down the brush strokes and drips. The hood was a challenge, as there were thick brush strokes and the paint was super hard, although there were a few spots where the paint had already fallen off. The rest of the body went way better.

Next time I will hit it all with 180 or 320, and see how I like it. I am really not too concerned with the few dents and dings, this ain't gonna be a show truck. I have a few cases of Rapco 383 OD Green spray paint to shoot on it. I am also planning on taking the hardtop off to paint the bed rails and the back of the cab, and I will paint the hardtop at a later date.
